Good stay in Penang ”

Great location in Georgetown penang. Hotel has its own unique flavor and most importantly the room and toilet was clean and comfortable. Very friendly and helpful staff, check in and out was fast as well. Read some reviews that you can hear some karaoke going on but I found it to be very tolerable during my time there. Sure you can hear some singing, but it definitely did not affect my sleep. Location is very near Makan area, within walking distance. To sum it up, I will definitely book this hotel again when I visit penang again.

Pleasant stay with friendly and helpful staff ”

My fiancée and myself had a pleasant 3 night stay at the Sovereign hotel. Hotel manager was able to provide a temporary room as we checked in early at around 6am in the morning. They helped us move all our belongings to our room once it was available. Staff was extremely helpful (Jessie). He was friendly and suggested the places we should visit and helped us with the routes. Room was cleaned every time we left the hotel. Really enjoyed the stay and the colonial design of the building. Will surely be back!

Quiet hotel that is close to the night market”

We had a two-nights stay in a Deluxe En-suite double room. There are several rooms of this type, and I think we certainly got assigned the worst of them (room G-03). This ground floor "room" is best described as a confined space, in total contrast of what the photos of a deluxe room show. In the Facebook page, there are also reviews from people who mentioned that the room looked differently from the photo, so I especially took the time to write to The Sovereign Hotel, requesting a room that is like what the photos showed. Alas, turns out I was just wasting my time. The room also smelled of smoke, despite the air-conditioning and fan were both turned on for the whole night. There was simply no air-ventilation so the smoke smell lingered. We mentioned it to the front desk; they sprayed some air freshener and the second night was tolerable. That being said, all of the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The only thing that puts us off was the disparity in room pictures. I am not going to pay the price I did for that confined space again, ever.

This trip to penang i go with my business partner. Normally they like to stay at 4-5 stars hotel with nice lobby, with lift... but this time i intro to them in special and unique style hotel ~ The Sovereign Hotel. The 1st impression was they quite shook when we reach infront the hotel. But when they walk in to the hotel and look surrounding, they love this hotel so much, because it is special and really special. Cheap and nice! We drink beer inside the hotel with open concept rooftop, nice weather and nice moment.

I loved my stay @ The Sovereign Hotel. For those of you who love history, this is THE best place to stay (even for couples). Located in a refurbished Peranakan building, even the rooms are inspired by a Peranakan flavor. Strongly recommended!

The Sovereign stay”

I loved the stay at The Sovereign Hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and always available to help me with any query I had. I enjoyed the laidback and relaxed atmosphere of the place and will Definitely come back again.

Centrally located with an essence of old Penang”

The hotel is a refurbished shophouse with the reception probably in a living room with the original tiles still there and a courtyard behind. The rooms were also decorated as if set 50 years ago, but with modern amenities, of course. A simple breakfast was also provided comprising of bread, cakes, roti canai and coffee and tea. The hotel is walking distance from KOMTAR bus terminal so access around Penang Island is a slight bit easier. The hotel can also call for a taxi whether for transport or a day tour if you wish.

Caring and trustworthy hotel staff”

It's a wonderful stay. Appreciate The Sovereign staff for being caring and attentive. Little things like giving the guest a choice of the level she wants to stay, helping to book the taxis, and recognizing each guest by name count. More importantly, thank you for helping to resolve my payment issue and for being trustworthy when I entrust you with my credit card details. It shows that the staff are willing to go the extra mile to please. Kudos!

A cute boutique hotel”

A well presented, smaller hotel in a classic Georgetown building. Food in the evening is readily available in a multiplicity of food markets. Access to the free bus is an easy walk. The breakfast provided was tasty without being over filling.(Might I suggest tea as one of the drinks options?) The area itself has some interesting buildings to walk around and see, and if you desire something `cooler` there are a couple of shopping centres to visit as well! The staff were helpful and friendly. Highly recommended for the traveller looking to experience some local colour. PS - just an alert. There is no lift, so be prepared to carry your suitcase up stairs.

Great location ”

Stay was good. Well it is what you paid for. I will start with the good points. - location is fantastic! there is a nightmarket just out the street,great coffeeshops surrounding it, near to the malls and basically within walking distance to most attractions. I won't take the bus for attractions in town unless you have plenty of time to kill - walking is much faster due to terrible traffic. - the staff member that checked us in was very nice,incredibly helpful and genuine. We forgot to get his name but he was the highlight of our stay there. He always had a smile on his face and was always ready to greet us. - for the price paid, it was a good place for a short stay. Nice and spacious room with a comfy bed and basic amenities. Onto the cons: - for a pretty new hotel, there are stains on the wall and mold in the shower. I know it is a older style building but these problem should not be there for a hotel this newly renovated. - sound proofing is terrible. I am not sure it is something that can be helped due to the nature of the building, but if you have trouble sleeping at the slightest noise I would not recommend that you stay here. You can hear everything. - there is a flushing style (which I understand it not in all rooms) due to some pump that is connected to the air-conditioning, which I was told. Overall I would say it is a great basic place to stay for a short trip in Penang.

Great location, great service”

The location of this hotel is nicely situated near modern buildings and old rustic buildings. There are plentiful of good food opportunities within walking distance from the hotel. Hotel parking is limited to 7-8 cars, with more around the area (which are usually taken up). As it is on first come first served basis, it could be an issue during busy period as the hotel expand to accommodate more rooms. Hotel service is outstanding, with a friendly staff at the desk. I cant help but to feel that the hotel could be understaffed as this one guy does everything from checking us in to cleaning the rooms in the morning. Room is comfortable, although I must say their Deluxe Room situated along the front of the building is rather awkward. They retained an old feature of the building ie the wooden door, which has a small crackline running down the height of the door, which is a peephole to the outside. Which means it works as a peephole for the people from outside too, should one be bold enough to do that in the open. We decided to change to a smaller room for better privacy. All in all, I enjoyed my stay in this hotel and would come back here again.

I was very happy with my stay at the Sovereign Hotel - the rooms and facilities were clean and perfectly adequate for my needs. The staff were both very friendly and helpful. it's also conveniently close to excellent street food.

Heritage Style Hotel, Great Design, Value for money”

Recommended, you get more than what price you paid for. Acceptable cleanliness, good design, room with air cond, good location, near to georgetown main area and hawker center. hotel with car parks. In overall, convenience and satisfy stay.

Basics on budget”

Room is clean, bed is comfy, happy to have 2 pillows on each single bed. Clean towel but arrived after 7pm. Air con works well although abit noisy. Rain shower also comes with hand held works well with both cold and hot water. My only complaint is the water closet, its so slow to flush, i break out in sweats trying to get it to work. Water is available to refill at the reception, and local breakfast can skip as one can never have enough of Penang food. Location wise is walking distance to penang road with all the street food and fascinating street art. And close enough to ride a grab to Penang Hill and airport. I am disappointed with lack of bus information at the airport and around the city. Penang people are a friendly lot, thumbs up. Do slap in lots of sun block, its really hot

Water supply problem but the owner is very helpful”

In overall it was great. However, the hotel faced some water pipe problem and there are no water supply during our stay. The hotel owner is kind enough to pay for our taxi so we can take our shower in another hotel. The street is quiet but vehicle sound can still be heard if the room is facing the road. The hotel owner brought us to the top floor so we can take photo of the Komtar (Penang landmark). He is also kind enough to give me medicine as I was having a headache. We were impressed!

Good place to stay”

We enjoyed our stay at the sovereign. The room was large and shower was good. It wasn't quite as grand as it appears in the pictures but still a nice place to stay. The breakfast was tasty; toast, cakes and roti bread with tea and coffee. The supply of cold water is useful and it's very close to hawker stalls for a quick dinner. Ask for a room towards the rear of the hotel as we were told it can get noisy on the street side but we slept fine the whole time.

Exceptional”

The hotel is located very near the center of penang,komtar building. It is very easy for transportation around the city. By the way, the room of the hotel is very clean and new. But the signal of internet is very weak, they should improve that.

I like the old building so it gives a special feeling facilities inside are new the hotel location not in Georgetown but can walk about 20-30mins, near Komtar mall and some eateries breakfast simple but good enough room quite spacious

Overall the hotel is quiet clean, the location is also good. Besides, the foreign worker "abang" is very friendly and helpful. Look forward my next trip with Sovereign Hotel! Recommend 👍

CNY Visit”

No complaints here. 15 min walk to central Georgetown. Anyone who complains about the noise must live and sleep in near silence, and at 7pm as it stops at 1am at the latest. Rooms are great, staff are helpful. Just a genuinely good solid hotel that is more value than what you pay.
