"We came to the Culvert for a short transit one-night stay and used it as our base while in Kuching. We were originally told it is far away from the city and would be inconvenient to use as a base. However, we didn’t think it was an inconvinience at all. We spent the day visiting the Cultural Centre that is just 5 minutes away by car and then visited the city at night (which is better given the nicer views with the lighting effects). The Culvert is really basic so visitors must not compare it to a normal hotel. It is more like glamping venue but little more equipped. The normal room has a bed that is immediately by the door. Small bags can be put under the bed while larger ones may have to be put at the small platform in between the toilet and the bed. Yes, there is ensuite toilet, which is great, albeit the small size. So some degree of basic comfort and privacy are met. The breakfast was awesome and delicious. We thought it was very properly prepared and no corners were cut! "

"We decided "Kuching" in Sarawak, Borneo as the destination (we live in Singapore) as something a bit more adventurous than just "beach and pool", with 3 teenage children. Good Choice. There's plenty of interesting and exciting things to do. But where to stay? If the main thing is visiting mountains and kayaking and caving and hill tribe visiting, then Damai Beech is not the best location, but it worked, and Damai was a really lovely place to get back to at the end of th day. Fantastic view from our suite, and a reasonably good beach. I must say I saw lots of reports in Agoda saying how shabby Damai is, how poor the service is etc .. but then also others saying how good it was. Look, it's Malaysia! And this is not a new resort either, so if you are used to the Grand Hyatt or the Ritz, of course it's a bit shabby, but it's fine! Damai was a really good choice, and our class of room (the Hill Top Suite) was superb. To be honest, getting 2 adults in there and 3 teenagers was a little cramped (with an extra bed) but we got it to work, and had 5 nights there. The Bidayuh would be ideal for couples with a lovely 180 degree panarama of the bay. If yoy have the money, get two rooms! There are different types of room there, and perhaps some of the standard rooms may be the ones being criticised, I don't know. I also saw comments about slow service. But you again, relax .. we found them to be very friendly and obliging. Ok, they were sometimes a little slow, and got a couple of things wrong, but hey, we were on holiday! Relax, it was really fine. One thing to watch: check out when the local school holidays and avoid this period, and also perhaps avoid Sat / Sun as there are quite a number of local Kuching families who come up for the weekend, and take 'day rooms' so it is much busier then. The main pool is really too small for a crowd, but fine when it's quieter. "

"This hotel is low density and has the most incredible setting with views of the mountain, mangroves, beaches and Bako national park. Spacious, luxurious rooms with balcony. Loads of space for 4 people in our room with a huge bathroom (corner suite) The kids loved playing in both swimming pools. They provided inflatables for the kids and have a large array of board and card games available for them to play. The chef made individual meals to order for the children for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day - best macaroni cheese in Malaysia! Both pools are lovely. Cove 55 is extremely clean, impeccably decorated and the staff try so hard to personalise your stay. I highly recommend Cove 55 for families or couples wanting to stay somewhere friendly and high quality from which to easily explore Santubong mountain (15 mins), the Cultural village (10 mins) , Bako national park (40 mins) and the Kuching wetland boat rides to see dolphins, proboscis monkeys, fire flies and crocs"

"Spent 2 nights at Village House on a work trip. It was a non-peak area so the resort wasn't full. Staffs were really friendly, room was very clean and comfortable. Love the atmosphere at the village house! Perfect for those who enjoy privacy and for those who want to spend quality time together. It was a bit difficult to find the place in the beginning as the place wasn't labelled and there wasn't any signboard. So if u're coming from Kuching, as u arrive at the Tjunction with school on your right & mosque on your left, go straight. Village house is along that road. Food is good but more on the expensive side to be compared with other local hotels in kuching but since the area is a village, there's no other place to eat if u don't have a car. No halal food serves but there's choices of seafood and vegetarian. If u would like to dine out, nearest town would be Damai, which is about 15 mins away where there are other hotels and foodcourt. "

"We thought Permai Rainforest Resort was amazing! Such a beautiful location with both rainforest and ocean. We stayed in the treehouse and had a beautiful view of the ocean and the rainforest. Treehouse was beautiful, bathroom and towels/sheets could do with an upgrade but didn't bother us too much. Breakfast and dinner included was great! Even though we ended up ordering extra stuff most nights because the buffet wasn't amazing. Heaps of activities that we didn't get a chance to do but plenty of options. The pool was so nice and refreshing. Also would recommend the jungle trek to the waterfall. So beautiful. Location is very far from Kuching town centre so if that's where you're wanted to go each day would not recommend this resort. We took one day trip into Kuching to visit the wildlife centre. Was pretty cheap for a grab/taxi. Overall would definitely recommend Permai Rainforest Resort!! Will definitely come back if we're ever in Kuching again. "

"We very much enjoyed our stay at the Highlands Resort and would recommend it to anyone visiting Kuching who wants to experience the Borneo highlands. The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and there are plenty of walks from the hotel. We enjoyed the walk through the jungle to the Kalimantan view, the views over Indonesia were great, and I climbed Mount Penrissen which was a tough five hour hike but very rewarding. The activities desk was very helpful and you can do guided activities if you want to pay. The hotel was good value for money. The vegetarian menu has some good dishes but would be enhanced by a little more range and creativity. The restaurant staff were very helpful and always made sure we had some iced water after coming back from a walk. The outside pool was out of action when we visited which was a little disappointing but the spar service and pool was very good. We hired a car in Kuching and drove to the resort which gave us a little more flexibility, but the hotel also provides plenty of transport round the resort area and some trips further afield if you want them. We enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere in this lovely place."
