      WOW!!! Do NOT hesitate.”

Beuatiful and naturally built and settled, Renovated roomy rooms, Great food. Comfortable viewing deck looking into Kruger (let the wild come to you).

we hadn't been to protea kruger gate lodge before and we not planning on going this time either. we were planning on going to restcamp lower sabie or satara what we always do when in kruger. although we find the restcamps in kruger are getting worse and more expensive by the year we still were'nt looking for alternatives. but the restcamps were fully booked. we had to find an alternative and the private game lodges in kruger are too expensive for us and so we looked for alternatives as near to the park/gate as possible. we found protea kruger gate after googling a bit and chose for it partially because it's only 100metres from the paul kruger gate. i actually had no idea what to expect and sseing some other protea hotels alongside the roads before arriving my expectations weren´t getting any higher to be positive. when we drove through the gate and arrived at the reception area i knew right away this protea coukld not be compared to any other we have seen. it is beautiful !!! and handsdown one of the best discoveries we have ever made travelling through s.a. it is spacious, natural and blends in with the surrounding and still very cosy and luxurious. the rooms were renovated and roomy with a comfortable couch, very comfortable bed (one of the most comfortable we have been in in s.a.). the room and bathroom were very clean and the shower was spacious and great. the grounds are beautiful, lush and well kept. you are actually sleeping in the wild, between trees with birds, monkeys, antelope on the grounds etc. the grounds are fenced so you do not have to worry about any dangeraous animals wandering on the grounds of the lodge. the rooms and main area are connected by a walkbridge through the trees. the viewing deck is very comfortable and looks back into kruger and while having a afternoon drink the wild come to you (fence) like elephant, hippo´s, buffalo etc. the food is great and dinner´s outside under the stars in a lapa with all the delicious food you can think of

Charming Hotel on the doorstep of KNP”

      Character, decor and location

The hotel had a very warm and charming decore that really fitted the African safari theme. Room was comfortable with all the basic amenities. The hotel has a boma for dinner with plenty of variety of good food. Best of all, its literally a minutes drive to Kruger gate so that you can enter Kruger National Park as soon as it opens! Highly recommended if you can't get accommodation inside Kruger National Park

Excellent Hotel - Feels like a 5 star resort”

Location, Free Breakfast and Dinner, Safari's organized by the hotel

Loved our stay here. It is a beautiful property. We loved sipping drinks at the bar overlooking the park. We even saw a hippo from the deck of the hotel itself. The hotel is more like a resort on a huge property. Their dinner which is included in the price is phenomenal. The dinner is buffet style with about 10 main course dishes to choose from and a huge salad and dessert bar. The staff was very friendly and helpful. You are about 5 mins away from the Paul Kruger Gate. The hotel organizes Safari's to Kruger and Sabi Sands which are excellent.

Right at Paul Kruger Gate, Cleanliness, Safe

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate is at a superb location - just a minute away from Paul Kruger Gate. The property is safe and has all of the "western-style" amenities and facilities. A little too commercial, but has what you need for a clean and safe accommodation.

Perfect Base for exploring the Kruger”

      Location, Food, Rooms

Really nice hotel, right outside main gates to Kruger. Spa could do with being bigger and pool area is a little sparse and basic looking but everything else was perfect. Buffet meals were great although deserts selection a little limited, and I would say get to breakfast early on weekends as the queues for fried eggs/omelettes was a joke. Aside from those minor items I loved this hotel and would stay here again.

      Viewing terrace, outdoor show-cooking restaurant

Spent 3 nights here on a self-drive trip around Kruger. The big selling point of this lodge is its proximity to the Paul Kruger Gate and its position as fairly central in the park. Whilst you could journey around Kruger stopping at camps which are fairly basic; staying here allowed us to do a 'loop' each day, taking a different route, e.g. Down to Lower Sabie, Crocodile gate, and Malelane, or north towards the Orpen gate. The additional benefit is taking advantage of the organised safaris that leave from Paul Kruger gate, very reasonable and on the doorstep without the travel time from e.g. Hazyview etc. Room was spacious with a 'lodge' feel, however, the walls/ceiling and bathroom fittings were tired and the shower continually flooded the floor due to a 2cm gap at the bottom of the glass screen, safe didn't work and a large gap at the bottom of the room door did not prevent mosquitos in the evening! Bed was big and fairly comfortable. Nothing outstanding but did the job. The communal areas make you feel more like you're in a game reserve, the viewing terrace was great and I think if we had been fortunate to see any animals roaming in front of us, this review would have been 4-stars! Food ok but a little repetitive, it is a shame that the outdoors restaurant was only open on the Saturday we were there - much better quality and atmosphere when we ate there. Despite advertising free wifi in the communal areas, signal too weak to connect...but who wants Internet access when you are supposed to be enjoying a wild experience? Would stay again simply for location, but the rooms could do with some attention.

Strategic location for Kruger National Park”

      Location, location, location

All staff we met were very friendly and helpful. The room is big and clean. All amenities meet western standard. Location is just a bridge away from Paul Kruger Gate. Breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, and they are variety and sufficient (drink is not include in the dinner buffet line though)

Friendliness and quality of the staff, good food, good location for Kruger Park safari

Great place to stay, located adjacent to Kruger Park, excellent staff always friendly and helpful - we were in one of the older rooms so it was a little tired but still comfortable, others in our part were in a renovated room which was of a high standard. Good choice of food at breakfast and dinner - WE WILL DEFINITELY RETURN.

      Kruger Park 3 day stay”

The staff were extremely helpful, especially the staff booking the Safari's. The location is second to none if you do not stay in Kruger Park, you can not get any closer.

I've stayed at this hotel 3 times over the last year. This was the first trip I did not drive myself. The safari bookings through the hotel were fantastic as were the staff that work in that area. This was organised top notch, I was there for only 3 days between Christmas and New Year. The hotel picked me up at Skukuza Airport so I had a mini game drive back to the hotel and was in the park every day from gate open until gate closing, all arranged by the hotel. Absolutely fabulous stay!! Would Recommend anyone to stay at this hotel!!!

Fantastic hotel that has all the modern amenities ”

Good starting point for new visitors to Kruger

Meals - Buffet Brekkie and Buffet Dinner with good selection. Rooms - Nicely decorated and large. Staffs - Friendly and hospitable. Reminder to guests to be friendly and polite too! Wifii - only in common area. Spa - The stress relief massage is heavenly. It's open but sheltered and you lie on a thermal covering so you are kept warm. A must try to release those muscle knots from driving. Activities - Book at the office next to reception. Tried the bush walking but didn't get to see much animals. However you learn lots of the little stuffs e.g. paw prints, poo poo which you don't get to know during game drive. Also tried the afternoon game drive. Got to see Big 4s. Nice guide from Echo Africa.

Terrible location if not coming from inside Kruger”

Not much, nice room, quiet atmosphere

Actually I hated this hotel for a few reasons, it is FAR too expensive for what I received. The first major problem is that if you are driving in from the main highway you pretty much drive through constant village after village with horrible traffic, people walking in the road and cows in the road. I'd only recommend arriving here from inside Kruger Park since it's literally 100 meters from the Paul Kruger Gate, but certainly don't drive here from Nelspruit or points north. The next problem is that we stayed here only because we wanted to do a game drive in Sabie Sand Private reserve, unfortunately the reception staff at night when we arrived nor in the morning when we needed to leave knew anything about booking this game drive. The morning staff said check with the information desk which didn't open for another 3 hours... does me no good on a one night stay, that's the only reason I chose this hotel so was extremely disappointed. My last major gripe here is that there is no in-room wifi, only in the lobby and restaurant areas. Very weird these days and not something I've experienced with international chains in South Africa. Front desk staff need to be able to help guests arriving and departing outside of business hours with game drives, simply not knowing anything isn't acceptable.
