Exceptional”

Almost the best hotel in Penang! We stayed at the Merchant hotel for a total of three weeks. First one week and then I extended for an additional two weeks. The front desk staff is excellent; the room was a 10+ rating. A perfect room with a good bed, full closet, fridge, safe deposit box, good TV, good size desk and chair with multiple electric plugs. An extra (soft) chair in the room and a good bed with four pillows. Bathroom with a full tub and excellent shower with good water pressure. Hot water in both the shower and sink. Fully stocked with all amenities. The in-house breakfast has a good selection, but the eggs, sausage and potatoes are always lukewarm at best. I hate cold foods for breakfast! The Wi-Fi is intermittent at best. I see no repeaters or Wi-Fi extenders in the hallways. Usually I get about 10 minutes from time to time then it disconnects. It seems that it usually disconnects right in the middle of me doing something important. I then go down the road to an internet café to send my important emails. We come to Penang every year (for 10 years now) and stay in hotels from 3 weeks to as much as 3 months. This was the first time at the Merchant Hotel. Even though the room is a five star room and the staff is great, I will never return because of the intermittent Wi-Fi.

I enjoyed my staying at Merchant Hotel for many reasons: 1. The staff is wonderful. Always smiling, very helpful and professional. 2. The rooms are pretty spacious, very well maintained and clean and everything worked good in the rooms (WiFi, hot water, aircon) 3. There was complimentary coffee/tea, ice tea, milk and water at the room which was refilled every day. 4. Good location 5. The hotel restaurant had tasty food at great prices and the breakfast was okey. I did´nt find any negative things about this place. If you are heading to Georgetown in Penang, this is a very good option for your staying! I will stay there for sure next time when going to Penang.

An Excellent Hotel”

My wife and I are fairly familiar with Penang and wanted a midsize hotel in the Penang Rd area. We chose The Merchant because it is in walking distance of most places we wanted to visit and it is a CAT Free Shuttle Bus stop for other Georgetown sites. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and eager to please. The room was large enough to move around, did not feel cramped, clean,and was comfortable...especially the bed. It was excellent. The 24 hour front desk was a good safety feature. I really have nothing negative to say. The Merchant is not our go to hotel in Penang.

Clean and nice”

I have stayed at Merchant Hotel a couple of times when on shorter business trips to Penang. The hotel is basic but clean and with nice staff. The breakfast buffet is also pretty basic but nice. The staff are all friendly. The location is in the city center not far away from main attractions. Nothing to complain about! I will certainly stay at Merchant Hotel again when visiting Penang next time. Just one thing that is sad: The restaurant at the ground floor was not open during evenings this second time when was staying at Merchant Hotel.

Mesmerized”

We enjoyed every moment of our stay in Merchant Hotel. The hotel is located centrally near to restaurants and bus stop where you can hop on a bus for free. The Penang heritage site is just 10 minutes walk. It seems everything is accessible from this hotel.We walked around the town and discovered eating places, art paintings on walls. some seen on posters and souvenir shirts of Penang. We visited Penang Hill and Batu Ferringhi night market. The Chinatown night market also offers variety of items and street foods. I love this city; quaint,yet charming in its own way.

Had a pleasant stay here in Merchant Hotel very friendly and professional front-office team check in and out was fast and thank you so much Mr Alif Akmal for personally attending us for changing room due to the clog bathroom they change us into bigger room with balcony! Breakfast was great (i love the hashbrown!) Clean and cold room high water pressure for a great shower! Will come back again soon! ❤️ Check in time is 3PM if you wish to check in early they will charge you RM50 for it. Deposits RM100 returnable during check out and heritage fee is chargeable RM2 per night. Parkings are available behind the hotel (1st come 1st served)

Amazing hotel except for breakfast”

Very pleasant stay, condition of rooms are excellent and location is prime. Only complaints are that the hotel's breakfast is quite horrendous. We did not expect a 5 star hotel international breakfast obviously, because of the affordable prices, but it is still quite unacceptable. Firstly, variety is very limited, only about 4 items. Other than those items, there are cheap quality cornflakes, some bread and 2 kinds of fruits. Secondly, the fruits (watermeleon and honeydew) that were served were actually already spoilt. It obviously smells and tastes sour. Informed the service staff and they changed it. Coffee provided is very bland and tasteless. Second complaint is that they keycards they provide for access to the rooms goes out of order frequently. During our 3 night stay, we have changed keycards for about 8 times. Although the service staff told us that is was due to us placing the keycard close to our phones, it was not the case because sometimes we do not even bring the keycards out and the same thing happens over and over. Was really frustrated. To be honest, if Merchant Hotel wants to be listed as a 4 star hotel and for me to agree with it, it would be for it to revamp its whole breakfast quality and quantity.

Location, value for money.”

The hotel is all about value for money and location. Stressing on the location, the hotel is strategically located within walking distances to all the major attractions in Georgetown, Penang. The hotel itself is relatively new, hence it is clean, in good condition and has its own parking lots. The deluxe king room that I took is spacious, clean and has good facilities such as wifi, mini fridge, safe and a bath tub. The TV offers good channels selection as well. The hotel staffs are very friendly. The only issue I faced was a little encounter that I had with a cockroach that somehow manage to crawl out of the washroom's drainage. Managed to subdue and trap the cockroach under the waste bin but a shaken occupant may have faced a bigger issue. I have informed the hotel staff about this matter during checkout and hope they rectify this problem (easily rectifiable by installed a net over the drainage). Other than that, the hotel is definitely value for money in a very strategic location.

Comfortable and great stay. The room need to have more sound proof as it's noisy in the morning or at night. You need to wait about 3 - 5 minutes with running waters on shower to get heated up, if this can be improved, it will be better. Breakfast need the most improvements. Nasi lemak without proper sambal is not called nasi lemak. Not sure what it's called if its served with sardin. Other than that, everything else is above expectation and I would certainly consider Merchant as my first choice on my next visit to Georgetown.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Room clean and beautiful. Room no 2007. View very beautiful. Have iron and iron board inside the closet. Food for breakfast is good and variety. I will come again to penang and stay at merchant hotel

There is no words to tell you truth how we pleased to stay at Merchant Hotel. Everything is perfect. Staffs are very friendly and helpful. Cleanliness and room facilities are excellent. They keep two cold drinks in frig for complimentry gift. Breakfast is also good. We recommand to choose this hotel. Sein Lin Aung (Myanmar).

Staff helpful, tat good free dink in mini bar, break fast no good.... location good, next to hotel there is food court plenty of food to choose with Live Song, will be back to stay in Merchant Hotel... Three to fiive times yearly to Penang... usually l stay in CitiTel or BaBay view Hotel

Maybe the best budget hotel in Penang”

We spent 3 nights at Merchant Hotel and it was a very pleasant stay. The free buffet breakfast wasn't anything to write home about, but they had all the basics including baked eggs, very good whole wheat toast and fresh watermelon & fruit. Staff were very polite and friendly. Our room looked new. The location was handy with several nice restaurants nearby. We would definitely visit again and recommend to our friends.

Great Stay”

Merchant was a fantastic value for money. The room was nice and it had a bathtub which was great for our daughter. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The hotel is north of Old Town but within walking distance and there are some good restaurants nearby. The only below-average part of our stay wad the food. The free breakfast was decent, no compaints there, but we had dinner one night and the burgers (which received rave reviews) were not good. Other than that, it was an amazing stay.

The location of this hotel is very strategic, as it stays in the middle of Penang Island town, and easy access. Facilities wise, okay, as it is good for those finding a place to stay and has plans outside. Room was really spacious, big and comfortable! really love it! Food at the cafe is good, eventhough not many choices, but still, the best food is nasi lemak! Staffs are all friendly and helpful. Just need to improve on the entrance cleanliness as there's a lot of birds outside the hotel, and wifi connection. The connection was 'decent' but if can improve would be great! Overall, worth the price for a really good and affordable hotel. Thank you!

Good price point, great location”

The hotel is in a very good location, within Georgetown and is walking distance to a number of attractions but is still relatively quiet. Room cleanliness is generally satisfactory but a few of our rooms had minor small roaches and ants problems. No facilities onsite other than a small gym with a few treadmills and a multi function weights machine but the top floor boasts a small observation deck that has quite a good panorama of Georgetown. All in all, a very good deal for the price point.

Ambasador Hotel revisited!”

Use to patronise Ambasaddor Hotel in the late 70s early 80s.To my surprise Ambasaddor was rename Merchant Hotel,refurbishment was completed about two months ago.It was fabulous to see the revival of my old favourite joint! will definitely revisit Merchanct Hotel. Good location, but not for light sleeperzZZ”

Excellent located along Penang Road, this hotel is just a walk to the nearest Red Garden (for dinner or supper). It is conveniently accessible to any area within Georgetown and even to Komtar (15mins walk). However, the room condition of this hotel is slightly old and not sound proof (sound of running tap from the next door, door opening and closing etc). The toilet has poor air ventilation especially after hot shower, it took a while to become cool again. Overall, it is a pleasant stay here with the good location and value for money.
