They broke paradise”
18 months ago my girlfriend and I stepped foot on Kanawa for the first time. 18 months ago this simple little island stole our hearts and became my favourite place on earth. So much so that I planned a wedding there, 50 guests, white sandy beaches, life, love and simplicity, it would have been perfect. Having loved Kanawa so much we decided to return last week, this time with a group of 6. What we found has broken my heart, so much so that I am close to tears writing this. Kanawa is a shell of what it used to be. A place brought to its knees by management and staff that are bone idol, incompetent and beyond lazy. The management weren't able to handle having 6 people on the island, they ran out of beer, they ran out of food and on the last night we had to take over the kitchen to make our own dinner. They certainly won't be able cater a wedding party. The beach for the I dos is now a big don't, it was covered in trash. The staff only seemed to notice the rubbish when we started bringing them black bags full of plastic water cups. The accommodation, I loved the simplicity of it before but it's starting to look like they have run out of money for maintenance. Thatch is missing from the roofs, the paint job is horribly faded and the outdoor showers are a trickle, hardly fitting for a vacation wedding for your high maintenance aunt. The food, we stayed for four nights and had to settle for the same food over and over again. The menu hasn't changed with the new staff and ownership and anything that looked interesting wasn't available. There's only so much fish and chips you can have. The coral, as far as activities go, snorkelling around the beautiful reef looking at the hundreds of species is a sure fire winner with the crowds. Sadly the day trippers have trampled all the coral and the reef is now dead. 18 months ago we saw turtles every day, this time we saw none. The sadness of what has happened to this island cannot be explained in this re
