Hotel Continental Saigon”

Location, Value for money, Cleanliness

Booked a Deluxe Double room via Agoda for three nights and when we arrived, we were upgraded to a Suite. Staff was well mannered and spoke English. Room and bathroom were clean. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing the Saigon Opera House, and it had a balcony. Suite room was very spacious! Had a king bed and a single bed, perfect for a small family. Breakfast spread was simple but sufficient to start the day. The courtyard where we had our breakfast was very beautiful. Hotel is located at near Saigon Opera House (which is city centre) and surroundings are clean as this may be the high street area. Probably around 15 minutes walk to Ben Thanh Market. Lots of restaurants, sky bars and cafes in the area. Even though the hotel was built in 1880s, it is well preserved and spotless. Will definitely stay there again when visiting Ho Chi Minh city.

Great place to stay in Ho Chi Minh City”

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights/ 6 days and really enjoyed it. It's located approx 10 min walk from Ben Thahn markets and in 'the rich' part of District 1 - overlooking Louis Vuitton and the Opera House. I found myself catching taxi's to the more gritty / less touristy areas of Saigon - also, if you aren't aware, Ho Chi Minh city is currently experiencing an incredible 'food' journey. There's some magnificent restaurants, streets eats in this city - not really located near this hotel.. IT's also HOT in this city.. This hotel doesn't have a swimming pool. The Hot water takes a while to kick-in and the Air Conditioning is freezing so most of the time I turned it off. The breakfasts are just OK.. not great, but good enough, I suppose. The majority of staff were exceptional - couldn't be friendlier or more accommodating. The minority of staff, seemed annoyed most of the time and this translated into being unhelpful. Not very generous.. but like I say, it was the minority of staff. Beautiful old building (the first ever hotel in Saigon) and you really feel the charm and soul even if it is a bit run-down (but I really liked that about this hotel). I'd probably not come back here only due to the location which was a bit too touristy for me.

Grand Hotel”

Every morning at 5:15am, the splendid sidewalks of the Hotel Continental Saigon are steam-cleaned by a meticulous staff member, helping to maintain the impression of a magnificent and historic landmark. This effort demonstrates the staff’s dedication to making sure every aspect of the hotel is at its best for guests to enjoy. Indeed, every staff member I dealt with was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. A highpoint of the day was sitting in the lovely garden for breakfast, featuring trees planted in 1880 and an atmosphere that was ideal for reflecting on the hotel’s captivating style and place in world history. My deluxe suite was big enough to entertain 30 friends! Finally, the location is fantastic, within walking distance of Ho Chi Minh Square, Notre Dame Cathedral, Fine Arts Museum, Reunification Palace, and much more. I had a wonderful and memorable stay. Highly recommended.

very good hotel but disappointed with the final invoice and extra to pay when checking in. ”

We arrived at 10h30 am and room was already available and we were charged $US25:00 for checking in before 14h00 . Lot of money for us Canadians especially that we told the clerk that we were leaving the hotel in four days at 06h00 in the morning and that they could charged again the same amount to another client arriving before checking time. That was our 5th hotel in Vietnam and we never encountered this problem before but we were told "hotel policy". As we left, we tried again to be refunded but at 05h50 in the morning we dealt with a night staff that did not cooperate with us again "hotel policy" was his answer. The final bill was difficult to understand as the amounts in Vietnamese did not match our invoices only the invoice number matched. Again, as we were leaving for the airport and that the employee had limited English speaking we had to pay the bill and move on. That was our last stop from Vietnam having visited Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, Dalat and finally Ho chi minh and never encountered this problem in Vietnam. We left Ho chi minh on a sour note and flew to Siemp Reap. On a good note, the hotel is well located, very nice staff, good food, super nice room but very lousy policy for checking in. Travelers beware checking in before 14h00 it will cost you $US 25.00. Disappointed canadian traveller: Francine Mault

The best features of colonial architecture”

Towering ceilings, freshly painted, beautiful woodwork and marble floors

The Continental Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City sits adjacent to the most famous square in old Saigon, a sprawling zone which houses the stunning Opera House and the area made famous in the Graham Greene book (and film), The Quiet American. It is a truly atmospheric place, and the hotel has the old features that gave grace and beauty to the architecture of the French colonial era: magnificent, wide hardwood staircase, parquet marble corridors, vaulted ceilings, table cloths and an inner courtyard with frangipani trees. The location is great for wandering around old Saigon. While the breakfast is fairly ordinary, the hotel dining room has a great buffet 3 nights/week. Unfortunately, the dining room often is full of smokers and there are no environmentally-sound practices (despite their framed posting claiming these), with all sheets/towels changed daily and plastic bags on the daily newspaper.

Travel back in time to the colonial era”

The hotel is situated on Dong Khoi Street by the Saigon Opera House in District 1 (downtown), the central business district of the city. It is very convenient to have a walking tour of the area, and visit all the main attractions, such as the notre dame church, central post office, people's committee hall (which was a hotel by design when it was finished in 1902), and the main market. The hotel was built in 1880 during the French colonial period, it was named after the Hôtel Continental in Paris. Even today, the hotel still maintains the essence of its original architecture and style. Being an old building, the ceiling is really high, which gives the guests a completely different feel. The room we had is also really spacious. Hard wood furniture, European sized twin beds ( gives more authenticity than comfort ), and a small balcony facing the grand Opera house and a small square. All in all, it does give us the chance to travel back in time, and visit the hotel as it was back in the forgone era. Staffs are polite and courteous, which is not really the norm in Vietnam. The breakfast is rather basic, with not too much choices. However, the setting in the restaurant well made up for the shortcomings. So if you have never stayed in this hotel before, and if you are fascinated by history, it would be a worth while experiences to stay for couple of nights.

Stay here but don't book the city tour”

We had a great stay at the Hotel Continental Saigon. The room was spacious & spotless, & the location and breakfasts were great. We also booked a full day tour thru the hotel tour desk to see the Cu Chi Tunnels (a.m.) and a city tour (p.m.) It was very expensive for what was provided. The private driver and tour guide were great for Cu Chi Tunnels, but we could have done the afternoon city tour ourselves for a fraction of the cost. The Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum have audio tours or are clearly signed in English so you don't require a guide for these venues. Additionally, the "Fine Art Handicraft workplace" is a lacquer showroom with a few working artisans - really a thinly veiled attempt to get you to buy some souvenirs. This was not something I expected nor appreciated paying for as part of my tour. As well, the hotel tour guide didn't seem to know what this particular tour entailed because we had inquired and he couldn't satisfactorily explain it. Not happy.

Come for the charm, not the WiFi”

Location, huge rooms, historic charm

This review is for two stays at the Continental a week apart. First, the good. The hotel has historic charm located across from the Opera House. Convenient to most things in central District 1 and taxis are readily available. The rooms are HUGE (throwback to the old colonial days) w/high ceilings so no feeling cramped. Rooms are clean & reasonably furnished with comfortable beds. The breakfast buffet is good, with a good variety of items. Both Asian and Western dishes are available. Some rooms face the Opera House and have balconies. Other rooms have balconies overlooking an interior courtyard. Now the not so good. Although you can get the room A/C working to cool of your room, the hallways are open & non air-conditioned. The elevators can be extremely stuffy - I don't think there was any ventilation in them. As this is a "historic" hotel, one thing missing from the rooms is an abundance of electric outlets. They do provide a power strip in the closet, but modern travelers will miss having outlets everywhere. Finally, the hotel internet was spotty but acceptable on our first stay and almost non-existent on our second. The hotel uses a number of different WiFi routers with different access names - no central access point. Although we could see four different routers on our second stay, we got little or no actual internet access through them. We did get connected by taking the laptop to the lobby, but that was inconvenient. In addition, on our second stay, we had an interior balcony that overlooked the "Continental Patio". There was a corporate party there one night and it was lucky that we didn't need to sleep early. Music blared - there was little silencing in the room. If you are there when there is no event, it would be fine, but a corporate event or a wedding might be another story. So...a mixed bag. Good location, huge rooms, comfortable furnishings. Lousy wifi, few outlets and potentially distracting events.

a very unique experience in a charming and historic hotel”

I chose this hotel mainly because I wanted to see what it is like to stay in a hotel that has such a long history that dates back to the 1880's, and I must say I am glad that I made the right choice. This hotel definitely has more than met all of my expectations. Even though the hotel and the room may look a bit old when compared to other newer chain hotels (i.e. Marriott or Sheraton), but the Continental exudes an unique kind of elegance and grandeur that cannot be found at these other newer hotels. Everything is solidly built as in the good old days, such as bigger than normal rooms with thick wooden doors, extra long and wide hallways with very high ceilings. We stayed on the third floor with a nice city view, but faces a busy city street, so I was concerned about the street noise. As it turned out, the room was actually very quiet throughout the day or night since the windows were all double paned and provided excellent insulation, so we were all able to sleep like a baby. The hotel service staff were just as excellent, from the front desk, the maid, to the door man. For example, we were asking about good places to eat, and the front desk staff not only gave us the names of recommended restaurants with maps and directions, but they also gave us exact addresses by looking it up on the internet. That is what I call great service! Needless to say, I am very impressed by this hotel, and I would highly recommend it to all who plan to visit Saigon. If I come back, I would surely stay at the Continental again.

You can experience French Colonial Vietnam Luxury ”

You can experience French Colonial Vietnam Luxury at reasonable price. The hotel is in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City. Everything is within walking distance. Continental is to HCMC as Metropole is to Hanoi. But price is one third.

Hotel Continental Saigon”

The Hotel is centrally located, easy to access major attraction and street walk is safe. Hotel staffs are friendly and service is excellent.
Not all staffs are able to speak English. The pub in the Hotel closed too early, at 11 pm.

Overall, this is the Hotel I love to stay, friendly, old building structure centrally located. I can wake up early and watch the street of Saigon waking up. Rates are very reasonable. I will definitely stay in the Hotel next time I visit Ho Chi Minh City.

Excellent grand old hotel”

This is a grand old hotel built in 1880, and run by Saigon Tourist state agency. We stayed in a junior suite which was huge, well furnished in a classic style, and well appointed. Each room has individual wifi which is a big plus compared to those hotels that advertise wifi, but the router is way down the corridor, and you can't reach it! The hotel has spa, massage and gym facilities, but no swimming pool. Buffet breakfast is excellent, and staff are helpful and courteous. Hotel restaurants are fine dining and a bit pricey, and not well patronised. Not ideal for tourists, but there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from in Saigon. The hotel is situated nest to the Opera House in the uptown part of District 1. Close to a couple of large upmarket shopping centres. Its about a 20 minute walk to the Ben Thanh market and downtown backpackers area which used to have some great cheap cafes, but it now looks quite seedy and uninviting compared to our previous visits. I suggest you choose a room with a balcony, facing the Opera House, and on the right hand side of the hotel to avoid traffic noise.

An Original,City Center,Big Rooms ”

The rooms were large and luxurious. The Staff were all friendly and helpful. The location is Central, walking distance to anywhere

We will stay there next visit! The staff are all professional and helpful. When the renovations are complete the hotel will be fantastic! They need to limit the hours they use jackhammers and drills to 9-4pm.Then most guests will be out of the hotel. If someone is staying for a longer period than 2 days they should be situated away from rooms being renovated. My husband took ill and ended up in hospital for four nights. I requested to extend our stay until we flew home. Not a problem, I was given a twin room, then a suite for our last two nights. The breakfasts were extensive and the wait staff extremely attentive. The Restaurant meals were exceptional. We would Highly recommend the Hotel Continental Saigon to anyone travelling to Saigon who didn't want to stay in a large multi story modern hotel! From the 5th to the 15th January it was a great place to be! With the Opera House next door there was always some activity/ concert inside and outside on the Steps.Wedding season is also a highlight!!!!

Hotel in town with historical and classical design”

1 Good location. 2.Great hotel with clean environment. 3. The staff are Courteous and helpful.

I would like to compliment your staff, a male supervisor at the Crown Palace Restaurant who is courteous and helpful. He went extra mile by attending personally to our request for some food when we had breakfast at the restaurant. He is an asset to Hotel Continental Saigon. I had forgotten his name but I did mentioned his name in the Feedback/comment form when I checked out of the hotel on Monday 22 Dec 2014. I had placed the feedback/comment form into the Comment Box at the hotel lobby beside the reception. I had a pleasant stay at the hotel as it is clean and the staff are polite, approachable and helpful. I will recommend the hotel to my relatives and friends. Lastly, Happy new year to the management and staff of Hotel Continental Saigon. See you again soon.

Colonial style historic building”

Classical decoration, Location, Mixture of French and Asia atomospher

We had very pleasant time at Hotel Continental Saigon. The colonial building makes us feel like a time travel to the 19th century. The room is spacious and 4-meter-high cealing gave us conform all the time. The location can be good and bad - in the heart of the city, great convenience but noise from the trafic is too loud. The front desk staff is friendly and professional, but others are less. We surely want to stay again at Hotel Continental Saigon. Thank you for good memory! Nobu

nice, clean and stylish hotel”

center of the city, nice rooms, friendly staff

Hotel is located in the center of the city, near to opera house and still has a charm of colonial hotels from 19th century. I can recommend to the pairs who would like to enjoy atmosphere of "old good times". Around hotel are great shopping opportunities and you can make very easily tour around the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
