2 night stay for a concert!!”

absolutely loved the stay at Geckos! highly recommend if you are a student looking for a place to stay and don't wanna spend much especially if you are coming in to Dunedin for a concert or any event, absolute value for money! Lovely staff and were really helpful throughout our stay, thank you your hospitality! wish that the kitchen stayed open after 11pm tho, especially for a cuppa before bed or to refill water but other then that would recommend and would book again for another stay if I need to come in to Dunedin again. Cheers!

Its a good backpack hostel with supporting staff. We checked in after office hour. They left key and documents for us. One of the staff helped us after office hour. It is almost at the city center. Everything is at walking distance. There are no parking so you need to park elsewhere. They will tell you where the free parking is.

the most important thing to stay is price, and backpackers are more important than others. this is cheapest around dunedin i think.

Booked 1 night in private bunk bed room really basic but clean, hostel in the city center close to the octagon, friendly staff at the reception, free car park in the street 5 min walk to the hostel, good free breakfast, free wifi, for the price we paid and all the facilities I recommend this hostel

This hostel is look nice, cheap as it is. I booking online and can get 37 NZD for woman dorm shared bath room (stay only 1 night). My room was on the 2nd floor next to the smoking area. But compare the room with people in the morning the toilet and bath room is still not enough. I traveled form Wellington to Dunedin by airplane, arrive there about 10.30 am. Check in 2 pm, so we can stay in the living room and lounge. Staff there is kind,in my room we have TV, and Air con. But at the night time it is very noisy we can hear some people they on phone even it was 10.30 pm night time. The kitchen full with people also in the morning, at night after 10.00 pm kitchen close for cleaning . Some time we have not much time to eat coz an evening crowded with people. This hostel economic but some distant, if we take shutter bus form Dunedin airport it is easy taxi (cost 29 NZD) drop us in front off hostel. Distant walk about 800 meter to Octagon straight way, walking more distant about 1.8 Km to Dunedin Railway. My Trip in NZ is wonderfull, I do love This small town, prefer than Wellington city or other big city, few night may be good to explore this area. if some one take the bus (Intercity is better than Mana bus or Naked bus). Walk more distant form this hostel to the Intercity bus station. p.s My trip I book and traveler with Intercity and Manabus. But the Naked bus and mana bus late 4-5 hrs. Form Auk to WCC and form BUlls to WCC i have to spent more money to hire a car to WCC coz Mana bus late.

Cheap and cheerful, just what we wanted.”

We were looking for somewhere cheap and handy to lay our heads at night during a recent weekend in Dunedin, and found what we were looking for in Penny's. Only issue was that the first room we got checked into had a broken bed, fortunately we noticed this straightaway (and not when we returned home in the middle of the night). Went straight back downstairs to raise this with the friendly guy at reception and he immediately rehomed us. All in all, very happy.

The room looks old but big enough”

It's value for money with the price to have a single room. The hotel is about 8mins walk to city center, but I spent a long time to find it when I arrived. My room looks very old, and I always have to switch on the power plug every 45mins which is automatically set by the hotel. It always takes more than 45mins for charging my ph and camera, which I feel is not using friendly.

It is great that it is located in the city but it's not easy to find parking. Aside from that, everything is great... friendly staff & good facilities

Good value backpacker”

Private dorm room (room0)tad small. Could hear footsteps when people pass through the corridor, due to the ventilating holes and small gap between the door and floor. Shower near kitchen is nice and spacious. Steady hot water with good water pressure.

me and my friend had a good and confy stay. rooms were clean, enough bathroom is available. nice kitchen. Parkingspace around the corner. city-center 10 min away.

The room is pretty small but other than that we had a good experience. The kitchen and launge have pretty good facilities.

Great hostel in Dunedin”

Great location with street parking available on the next street, very helpful staff, nice warm lounge and a number of showers and toilets so I never had to wait in line long and free breakfast! Was perfect for my short stay :)

Cheapest, free breakfast ”

If you leave the hostel before 7am you can't have your free breakfast. The hostel is not far to the city center, it's simple, the staff is nice but the place is not clean and the facilities are not very usefull. Good to stay only 1 night

Disgusting”

Being a solo, female traveller I opted for the double room rather than sharing. I beleived me and my belongings would be safer this way. While nothing was stolen, my window opened onto the fire escape, which also opened onto the smokers deck. The window did not close properly The curtains were literally hanging (falling)off the railing, and didn't even cover the entire window. The place was freezing and the heater blasted cold air at the floor. The place stank - I don't think it has been cleaned since it opened. There are grubby rugs over random bits of carpet, clearly hiding the source of some of the stenches. The toilets were covered every morning, and weren't cleaned until well into the afternoons. When I say covered, I am not exaggerating. The floors were flooded. I am a health care professional, I deal with body fluids and body parts daily, and this place made me feel sick. On top of this, the other residence didn't seem to have respect for other people. I can't comment on the kitchen, as I tried to avoid it at all costs. I opted to go for babywipes wash rather than enter the showers. There were three toilets and three showers for the entire place. I definitely wouldn't call it a hotel. I felt it was a complete rip off. Especially as I went there for the wifi, which was "broken" that weekend as "the computer needs a good kick". The staff were extremely nice and helpful, however, so that was the only positive.

Typical Hostel ”

You pay for what you get, smell of damp and quite dirty, but for the cost of the room you can’t complain. The heater in the room was exstreamly noisy and a lot of renovations happening which was an inconvenience and tripping hazard. Friendly helpful staff

I know this is backpacker. I can't habit to stay in old buidding and not good smell place. Because too much people use toilet together.Not really clean.

Good location”

Was well located, only stayed a night. The rooms are pretty basic and the power shuts off after 45 mins, making it difficult to charge the electronics and warm the room. Staff were friendly and helpful. Free breakfast, can't complain about that!!

Handy and affordable ”

Happy with most aspects of our stay but were disappointed that the television in our room didn't work, we really wanted to lax out in bed on the cold Winter's day. Raised this with the staff downstairs but they were unable to help - I think it was missing the satellite box so it wasn't necessarily easy fixed by them but something that needs to be addressed by mgmt.
