Great waterfront view room, wonderful staff, best location in Russell.

Wonderful, invest the extra $$$$ for a waterfront view, you won't be sorry! The front desk will make reservations for tours. Sail on the F. Murray Abraham tall ship, go to Cape Reinga. We found a great dive bar about a block away called the Duke of Marlborough tavern. Cheap food and drinks and pokies!

Centre of village - very friendly management

hotel had just changed ownership when we stayed there ... rooms were being upgraded (newer rooms are much nicer - ask for one of these). food in restaurant is excellent ... particularly all the fish dishes. the management team were very friendly and helped us booking our activities etc. russel itself is a bit quiet but a good base for bay of islands tours. lovely beach (long beach) behind the village is good for swimming.

Winter Break at The Duke of Marlborough”

Wonderful historic waterfront location in Russell village. Our large verandah overlooked the moored yachts and the Ferries coming and going to and from the wharf. Our huge room had a stunning interior design and two sets of French doors opening on to the verandah. The lovely dining room looks out to the water and was warmed by a traditional fire and a wall displaying the History of the early years in this part of New Zealand.

We had Room 1 which had a big balcony overlooking the Bay so a superb view and a lovely room. Also impressed with the dinners that we had, especially the slick service on the second night as the hotel also had a very large conference/dinner to cope with. Friendly, helpful staff and a lot of repeat clientele which says it all.

Great location, sea views and character ”

We stayed for two nights. We got a discounted deal thru Agoda so only payed $254. We had a small room with a queen bed, with a really modern bathroom. Normally this room rate would be $185/night. We had free parking. Staff were very accommodating. We ate dinner the first night, but had to book a table. It was busy so we ate at 8pm. We enjoyed drinks by the open log fire before hand. My wife ordered cloudy bay clam linguine, and I the market fish. My fish was lovely, but was rather lonely on the plate with a very small number of veges. My wife’s linguine was disappointing. It’s was not flour made linguine but more like rice noodle, very thin, the type you’d get in a packet. The clams and sauce were tasty. It spoilt the meal for my wife so we complained to the wait staff, who conveyed the message to the chef. The explanation given was he made them thinner that usual! It wasn’t believable, the difference was unmistakably. A great location but weve had better quality meals for much less.

This was the perfect place for us two to stay at in Russell. We spent two nights at the hoteo in great comfort, getting upgraded from the studio we had reserved to the spacious and well-fitted bungalow, enjoying the lovely view on the sea promenade and the very tasty and creative food provided at the restaurant. Nice young staff from various countries, traditional memorabilia displayed with subtle irony: a place to easily fit in and to come back to, which we already plan to do next year.

    beware the bungalow”

    location food hotel itself

To start I would say that if you had rooms in the hotel proper that it would have been a tremendous stay. We were a group of three that chose the bungalow. Unfortunately on a humid night this is a poor option. The bungalow contains a completely windowless bedroom that also does not contain an air conditioner. A large window with a blind is between the bedroom and the lounge where our friend slept in the sofa bed. As the bathroom is on the other side of the bedroom if our friend needed the toilet they had to access via the bedroom. The bed was very soft. Very difficult to sleep without leaving all the doors open. As the front of the bungalow is at the end of the bar..opening the Windows is very noisy. The bathroom window opened directly on the hotels back toilets abd air conditioning units. Overall nit the best stay..definitely paid too much for a stay in the bungalow

    Beautiful Location”

Gorgeous, well respected historic building with modern comforts. Well appointed, the rooms are unique and clean and beautifully decorated. Wouldnt recommend the "small room" though, we were in this for one night due to availability before being moved and it didnt even feel like the same hotel. We were attending a wedding and can understand for guests who were not it may have been very loud - for that reason a room on the street side of the hotel as opposed to the sea is quieter. But all in all really love this hotel :)
