Best hotels & accommodations in Christchurch

Hotel 115 is located in the center of city, 3 minutes away from a pedestrian area full of restaurants and cafes and has everything you need at a good price. The hotel is unique because it’s is part of a restoration project of Christchurch heritage light-rail. Basically, the hotel building is the old city light rail deposit, now converted to a covered shopping area with...

Stayed in Christchurch for our last night in New Zealand. Stumbled upon southwark apartments while searching for accommodation in the city. It is one of the cleanest places I've ever stayed although quite compact the room features are your essentials. Could do with better sound insulation it's never nice to be woken up but someone else's baby crying at 6am. Other notab...

I stayed at a 8 people mixed pods for 2 nights, this is my first time to visit New Zealand, thanks Jucy Snooze gave me a very good first impression of NZ. Public area/kitchen/shower room/toilet are tidy and clean. Everyone has their own private pod and electronic locker down the pod, It's Autumn time, the fan in the pod is ternary form, a bit loud, if you are not pulli...

I stayed here because of an overnight layover, and picked this hotel because it is less than a five-minute walk to the airport. It is also next door to the Antarctic Research Centre. I got off the plane at 2:45, walked to the hotel, checked in, went to the room, and still had two hours to spend looking at penguins, etc. Dinner options are limited if you are on foot. ...

Three of us stayed here before we flew out of Christchurch in one of the two bedroom rooms for one night. The staff were really welcoming and so kind, they let us leave our bags before we checked in and after we checked out as we had a very late flight. The room was spotless and the beds were really comfortable. The only issue was that it took two times ($3 each time) ...

BreakFree on Cashel well served our purpose to stay in Christchurch. We flied in and out from New Zealand via Christuchurch and we would like to have a clean place for the stopover. BreakFree on Cashel did a great job. The room is not big and it does not have kitchenware. But it has everything eles you need, including a mini bar and iron board. The room is very clean a...

There are so many hotels in Christchurch we felt it was a real lottery as to which one would serve us best. This one is slightly out of the centre but did not disappoint. The room was a good size with two armchairs and an occasional table, and the en suite had separate shower and bath. The bed was comfortable and big! The hotel has several different buildings but all a...

We have stayed here 3 times and have been very happy on each occasion. We visited Christchurch before the earthquake and have returned every few years to follow the progress in the redevelopment of Christchurch and to support the City. We have stayed here 3 times and have been very happy on each occasion. Motel is consistently clean and convenient to everything Chri...

The hotel location is really good, in the middle of the city just opposite the cathedral. Near shopping centre, you can just walk around to explore Christchurch and the good news is the Tram station is just around the corner, about 2 minutes walk. But there's something unexpected coming from the hotel at 6am in the morning during my stay, the fire alarm rang and there...

Pros -Owner was very friendly and fetch us from and to the airport -The room were huge and absolutely value for money -Good environment with close proximity to facilities and awesome restaurant Cons - Will definitely go back there when in Christchurch again! :) Regards, Goh

Don't believe the hype: Christchurch is not ready for tourists. It's a vast wasteland. We just stayed one night - flying straight in from Sydney - and hotfooted it towards Dunedin 24 hours later. The motel was a great introduction to New Zealand - clean, quiet and central. It's an easy drive from the airport (where customs/immigration was startlingly easy). My best mem...

I'd stayed in a few places already between Christchurch and dunedin and this was the first place that looked like it's advertised pictures. It was clean fresh and kept well. The other places were tired and worn out and needed decorating. So this was just lovely to spend my last couple of days in Christchurch in.

Stay was perfect, great value for money, lovely rooms and fantastic staff. We were so pleased with the hotel we returned for our last night of stay on our NZ holiday! The only downside was the lack of free parking however I think this is common among most hotels in Christchurch city centre and a cheap alternative was available beside the hotel. Overall, I can't recomme...

Excellent service from staff Chloe from the front desk. She assisted in booking my tours and was so helpful and patient in teaching me the Christchurch city map. She patiently answered all our enquiries. Room was clean and they were generous with the complimentary cookie, chocolates, milk, tea and coffee. Bed was super comfortable, big tv screen, and with good toiletri...

The Orari Bed & Breakfast is a real gem! Light and airy, and very spacious - very welcoming. The straff throughout the hotel were very professional, friendly and extremely helpful. The breakfasts were amazing, a wonderful selection, and again, the staff were very efficient and helpful in making the breakfast times fun and enjoyable. The location of the hotel is great -...

Parking is expensive in New Zealand. Appreciate that each apartment has its own parking lot to save on parking fee. Also, it was very convenient to unload my luggage into the house since we can park directly outside the doorstep! House was clean and tidy, bed was very comfortable and I had a good night sleep. Location is just right outside city centre so at night the n...

I really enjoyed my stay right from the beginning where I was greeted by a lovely lady who was smiling from the moment I arrived, apologised for keeping me waiting as she showed another guest to their rooms & advise me of eating places I could walk to. They upgraded me to a one bedroom unit with a spa due to an error with another customers booking. The room was very c...

This is one of the best hotel we stayed while we in South Island. We booked the 2 bedrooms suite which was very large and well-equipped facilities. There are TV in all rooms and provided the bed in the living room which my kids love it so much. Highly recommended hotel to stay in Christchurch.

Nice hotel in Christchurch. The best feature was the service. They go out of their way to make ones stay memorable. The only upper end hotel in all our travel around New Zealand that gave us unlimited free internet. They even gave free DVDs to watch in your room (room had a DVD player). Eating places (wide selection) is only a stones throw away. Go into Trip Advis...

We stayed one night and slept very well. Good kitchen and lounge area. Bathrooms everywhere but I always came to them when they were full, which was strange but walk to another corridor and success! Christchurch is still going through a fair bit of change but easy enough to walk around, 10-15min to worldwide. 10min to bus station to airport if you don't go the wrong wa...

Hotel was very clean and modern decor , good internet access in foyer, pleasant reception staff. Rooms where very clean and uncluttered, neat stylish and comfortable. Very well priced considering accomodation shortage in Christchurch,.Hotel was very centrally located with easy access to shops and city attractions, easy walking distance to most things

Stayed for 2 nights at the hotel, with my husband and parents. The location is very near to Christchurch main streets, CBD and next to Christchurch Casino. If you're hungry at night, you can always walk to the casino for late dim sum 😊. I booked 2 bedroom unit, it was spacious. The bedrooms are spacious. The master bedroom has ensuite bathroom, and the other bedro...

This is the best hotel in Christchurch, I have stayed in 4 hotels in South Island and this is the best hotel and good value for money. The accommodation is fantanstic and beautifully decorated with all the modern aminities and facilities. The room is big and the kitchen is fully equipped with everything and huge dining area. The restaurant food is great and well p...

To be honest, this motel is already on my top list now, I will stay here for anytime that I need an accommodation in Christchurch. Me, my husband and my dog juz enjoyed it so much here, room was clean, shower got over expecting pressure, and service was exceptionally good, it's juz feel like home. We left with a big smiles on our face🐶👧🏻👨

The room appeared recently renovated. So everything looked new and clean. The fully-fitted kitchen was a surprise. It offered all the cooking utensils we needed. To have an extra heater in the bathroom is a great idea. We felt warm and cosy staying indoors. The owner couple was very kind, friendly and helpful. My family had such a great time. I will book this place ag...

The hotel is within easy reach of the city, Restaurants, Botanic Gardens etc. They made us feel like we were at home. Very spacious rooms and facilities. Very helpful staff as well. We have used four hotels in Christchurch and this one is the best and affordable too.

Hotel is new. Hotel room is spacious and has mini-kitchen complete with cooking utensils, plates and cutlery, induction stove, dishwasher, microwave and mini-fridge. Even the bathroom has washing machine and dryer. Hotel is located near walking distance to Christchurch Central, providing easy access to supermarkets, tour sites and bus interchange. Good wifi connection....

It's a real lodge. Even for dorm room it's single beds... and there's spacious. The window next to the bed is SUPER!! Nice view, breezy air. The bed is comfortable. It requires a bit climbing though as dorm at 3rd floor. Kitchen is clean and fully equipped. Living room is cozy. Location wise bit far away from city center, free bicycles but have to get up early enough t...

There aren't many places to stay left in Christchurch post earthquake and this is a slight walk but well worth it. It's such a friendly comfortable hostel and the staff are super friendly. It attracts interesting friendly guests, especially as the kitchens are so well equipped and there are big tables to sit around.

This was fun and nice staying with the Jailhouse. It was re-makeup from the old jail facilities but it was bright and clean. No worries it was totally safe. The location was near to any place in Christchurch with in 10 mins drive. The staff was fun and very helpful during our stay.

Bruce is helpful. First night and First time in New Zealand. The place is well kept and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Really made the start of our honeymoon on a good Vibe. Will definitely stay here again when i come over New Zealand for our anniversary.

Pros - big space in the room and parking outside the room. Laundry room. Cons - Ladies toilets/ shower had a glass main door so people could see through the doors Kitchen was basic - no washing up liquid, mugs, tea towels, cleaning products etc and limited pans. There were no duvets on the bed. The WiFi isn’t free it costs $5 per 10gb for 24 hours. Basic for what ...

Loved my sty at this hostel and having backpacked previously in new zealand I would say this is one of the best hostels I have stayed in in a major city location. Staff were extremely helpful, facilities were top notch and loved the fact that you could either cook for yourself or you could choose to eat at either the restaurant or cafe onsite. Would definitely recommen...

This is the room we feel most satisfied of our 10 days trip in New Zealand generally speaking. The room is not as nice looking as other places in NZ as it is located in the historical building which is originally used for Royal Air force training - Wigram base. However, we find it quite comfortable in that it has a nice restaurant and bar down stair with modest decora...

The location is quite far from the city center. It's is near to the airport. One should have rented car to go to the city center. They have airport transfer for $5 each person. We called them when we arrived at the Christchurch airport and found out that we don't know what bus to ride. The van driver is very friendly. The reception is also warm and accommodating. We're...

Miki and Yan were absolutely wonderful. Miki helped arrange pickup from airport, finding directions to town, and transport to airport early next morning, even lending some cash to pay for the bus fare as I only had cards. Bathrooms were clean and dry. The house is very cozy and nicely decorated. Environment is quiet, perfect for resting up. Bedroom was cozy and spaciou...

We initially stayed in this hotel on our way from Christchurch to queenstown. We were happy with our stay so we rebooked for our return journey. This place is a great if you are wanting to stay somewhere in between transit. The guesthouse owner offers a taxi service at any time which is great. The staff really makes you feel welcomed and is extremely polite. It is ...

The three of us had an enjoyable stay at AAA Northlands Motel and would stay there again the next time that we are in Christchurch. The staff were helpful and our rooms were well serviced each day. Being offered the newspaper every day was a nice touch.

This motel is exactly as described on the agoda site. The location is ideal for those with a car; it's a good 10-15 minute walk to what's left of poor Christchurch's downtown and not a confortable walk (at least at night) from the railway station which is how I arrived. The large Hagley Park immediately opposite would be an advantage for those wanting to jog or air o...

Love the place. Apart from expecting to be in ground floor because we have one big suitcause, we loved the stay. The self contained studio is comfortable, complete with anything we needed, best of all it's clean and well looked after. I stayed in lower ground back in November and remember received good Wifi signal. This time around the Wifi signal was not very good...

We traveled from Auckland to Christchurch over the course of 18 nights in late September to early October 2019 and this accommodation was the BEST we experienced! The location is walk-able to CBD and major "go to" spots in Christchurch, super friendly staff, the bed was SO comfy and the room generously spacious and well appointed . Do not hesitate to stay at the Gran...

Our party of 5 adults stayed here on our last night in New Zealand. We had a 2 bed apartment with a further bed in the lounge. We found the apartment central and were able to walk around the city from here. We did not use the cooking facilities (except toaster), preferring to eat out at one of the many local restaurants. The hotel allowed us a slightly later checkout, ...

I stayed for 3 nights at this porperty while in Christchurch for business. While the rooms are quite small they are very well set out. Complete with functional little kitchen area where I could make all my own meals, a large bathroom where the shower had good pressure, and an outdoor area with table and 2 chairs. The young couple running the place where always on hand...

We arrived very late and were pleased that the hotel was only fifteen minutes drive from Christchurch airport, our two large two bedroom rooms with divans accommodated all ten very comfortably and at a very reasonable price. The next morning the staff went out of their way to help us out. Would definitely recommend as the rooms were very nice and very clean.

The staff were very professional and accommodating. The rooms were well stocked and even though we chose not to put the (make up my room) sign, we returned everyday to find new towels and the coffee etc. restocked. Sound did travel but not too much of an issue. We highly recommend this motel as its close to the centre of Christchurch at least close enough to walk. The ...

Really tastefully decorated, immaculate in every way and very obliging and helpful operators. We've travelled extensively around the world and in NZ and this ranks up with the best of accommodation anywhere. Will definitely stay there on our future visits to Christchurch. Highly recommended.

Motel is located on a very busy road but you do not hear the traffic if you have windows shut. Only a short bus ride to inner city Christchurch but the surrounding suburb has plenty of cafes, bar and restaurants. Room was very spacious with a nice comfy king size bed and very clean also has a laundry on site with complimentary washing powder. The staff are extremely fr...

We enjoyed our stay at the Arena Motel it was very comfortable and had everything we needed including free WiFi. Our room had a bedroom, a TV/living area a kitchen with fridge etc and a bathroom/toilet. it was situated a short bus ride or a long walk from central Christchurch but very close to the main railway station. We stayed at Arena Motel in Addington on two separ...

We booked late & also arrived late at the property. Greg greeted us & were pleased to notice he was also was happy to see our 1 yr old son. Our previous experience staying at B&Bs / motels were mixed.. even though we added child on the reservation.. :/ They even dropped some toys over for him to play with in the morning. We really appreciated this kind gesture. The ...

The room came cheap booking through Agoda, however the room was far better than our expectations. The owner looked to be Korean and really had the rooms in great order. Everything was clean and tidy and for a cold city it was great to have heaters and electric blankets. Another big plus was that wireless internet was provided free of charge and all you could use. A...

The rooms are nice for one person or several. Lots of tour groups coming through. I needed an internet access but the connection was a bit flaky and would drop occassionally. The gardens around the hotel are fantastic and I hope they finish construction soon so people can enjoy them. The room service staff was fast and spot on. They changed out the towels, mad...

What a pleasant surprise. We booked Amalfi last minute in Christchurch as our family of four began our two week campervan trip around the South Island. The staff just could not have been nicer, our upstairs corner room super comfy and clean, the self-catering facilities perfect for our needs and the location just fine.

The alpacas here are super cute and come in every colour! They are super gentle creatures. Our host Lorna took great care of us, introduced us to all the farm animals and made breakfast for us. I love the cute interior and cozy environment and like how we are the only ones living here (apart from the hosts) without other customers.

We had an excellent stay at Abbella Lodge Motel. The host, Sunny, made us feel most welcomed. Thanks lots! If we travel to Christchurch in future, we are likely to stay there again. The room was spacious, very clean and very well maintained. One irksome thing though, is the limited internet access. We were given only 100 MB free, and were told that an additional 100...

Vita Nova is a fine, cosy place to stay when you need somewhere to leave your bags when going on day trips. It is almost equidistant from the Air Force Museum (nice place to catch up on New Zealand air history for a few hours) and the train station (for a day trip on the Tranzalpine train). If you want to get around the city of Christchurch be sure to rent a car beca...

We chose to stay at this motel is for its location right opposite Riccarton Mall where we can easily pick up stuff from the supermarket and Kmart (which closes really late & is abt the only thing a family can do in Christchurch late night). Room is big and comfortable, with a well equipped kitchenette. The bathroom is big but unfortunately is badly designed with an ope...

The contact from the hotel 24 hours before arrival confirming arrival time and details for checking in was very much appreciated as I was too busy and forgot I was arriving super late! Also the complimentary upgrade was AMAZING! Room was very clean and very comfortable even heated so when I arrived was cosy and warm. When I was leaving very early the next morning one...

New , very clean, modern proprty. Comfy bed, great shower, fully equipped kitchennete.easy parking. Very welcoming, helpful & friendly host Mr.PUTU....thanks for the welcome chocolate gift .Excellent location close to shopping centre, supermarket, Overall this is the best lovely motel we have been in Christchurch..

the motel is on the outskirts of the cbd but given the devastation christchurch has endured, it will be a long time before any inner city provides more than one hotel again. the location suited us perfectly though, as it was on the main east-west arterial road which meant easy access to shopping, restaurants and tourist destinations. the best thing about salerno is t...

this is the best choice i did for South Island trip! Sue and Robbin are really nice. We do like the garden, and the room. The breakfast was most from the garden, really amazing! Sue invited us to look around the garden. We learned a lot for plants and fruits, as we never knew how walnuts and chestnuts look like in trees :-). The room is very clean and comfortable. Th...

i stayed in nz for more than 10 days at comparatively cheap hotels considering my budgets, but the best hotel my wife and i would like to recommend is heartland hotel cotswold in christchurch. i think it was cosy and quiet and the location was great for travellers. what i liked most was the hotel charge. thanks!

My wife and young daughter were catching the transalpine to Greymouth the next day, this place was really good for that. Although the location isn’t great for central Christchurch, for the station it’s walkable and is a modern and clean place to stay. Good value for money with WiFi included - the only downside was being up a tight flight of stairs with a buggy to get u...

We highly recommend Sumner retreat to anyone staying in the Christchurch area. The hospitality was fantastic. It was the best place we stayed at on our road trip through New Zealand. It was clean, comfortable, and very modern. We took full advantage of the rooftop pool and jacuzzi. The host personally came to greet us. It was definitely the perfect ending to our trip w...

If you want a totally luxurious bed and breakfast location in Christchurch, then you need look no further. We were treated as friends and nothing was too much trouble for the owners. We sat and chatted about all subjects with the other fellow guests and the atmosphere and surroundings could not have been better.. We strongly recommend a stay here !
Just booked
Traveler impressions of Christchurch
We felt so sorry about the damage that the city had from the earth quakes--courageous people !!!The botanical gardens, museum, art gallery and cathedral were a must to visit.
We were so surprised with the earthquake visible effects on the city. The town puts a great effort to both re-build but at the same time give tourists and idea of what happened and a very positive sign that the town wants to get back on their feet.
Everyone should visit Christchurch to see how devastating an earthquake can be and how creative humans are as a result of disaster.
Still recovering from the earthquake. While the gardens and museums are operating, it's lost its city centre.
Unfortunately because of the huge rebuild programme there is not a great deal to see. But the experience of seeing it & knowing the task ahead of them to rebuild this city it is well worth a visit & to spend a bit of money to help keep their economy going.
A City suffering as a result of a natural disaster. The World Community must rally together to help with the rebirth of Christchurch, even if it is to be relocated and the existing site left as a memorial to Natural Disasters.
Christchurch will need many years to recover. The community needs to work together to get their city back.
There is not much to do in Christchurch compared to so many other locations in NZ. It is quite sad how much was destroyed with the earthquake.
Everything is expensive after earthquake but understandable. Learning lesson for result of destructive earthquake,
Christchurch was refreshing. the best English food to be had. just a freshness about it. people took pride in their gardening.
The most striking thing about Christchurch is the resilient and creative response to the damage caused by the earthquake - who would have thought of creating a 'mall' out of multicoloured containers!
We regretted not staying longer because we could not see everything we wanted to. It was disappointing that everthing seemed to open at 10am and close at 5 or 5.
This town is still in shock of the earthquake and recovering. The botanical gardens and Gondola are really nice to do but apart from that theres not much to do and see in Christchurch.
Definitely worth visiting the Botanical gardens, going on the tram and going to the Washington Way Skate park for the die hard skateboarders.
The city is very much still I. The rebuilding phase from the earth quakes so it can be very frustrating trying to get around by car Nd taxi and the taxi fares are huge.
Christchurch is still recovering from the earthquake. We enjoyed visiting the Re:Start container mall, Punting on the Avon, and the gondola ride area
City is in the midst of rebuilding so there isn't much activities to do in the city centre but do drive around and make interesting discovering about the other parts of Christchurch
Show the effects of the earthquake, the big malls, hiking and other activities, Do not use the red bus is very expensive and the cheapest you will find other private buses on Sunday
Christchurch is a rather sad place to visit since the earthquake. So hard to witness the enormous damage and all the work still needing to be done.
a beautiful city fallen down by earthquakes. the building up is amazing, fast growing, and exciting.
check out the container shopping mall - very interesting concept and shows the resilience of the people of Christchurch!
It a quiet place and since we've been there after the earthquake so a lot of building need the renovation.
There are so many things to see in christchurch since the Earthquake happened. You can see the locals are so passionate about their city, you have the re-start mall, the art deco on many of the building walls around the city.
We were in Christchurch not too long after the earthquake. Devastated to see what the people of Christchurch and surrounds had to live through.
Christchurch has good sight seeing places eg. the Mt Hull, Atorowa and easy to go to other towns in the NZ South Island
Christchurch, has many interesting places of visit especially Mt Hutt, atorowa and close to Queenstown
3 years on and the city centre is still one big building site. At least parking is not a problem. BUt essentially you can do a tour of the old city centre by yourself in a car within 1 hour: everything worthwhile seeing has been destroyed and is in various states of being demolished.
Christchurch is New Zealand's second-largest city and the gateway to the South Island. The city is in the recovering from the earthquake in 2011.
Because of the rebuilding I think christchurch is doing its best, botanic gardens, the coast, double decker bus tour and the people were great.
There is really nothing at Christchurch city itself, due to the earthquake's destruction. Its a great place to get cheap airfares, grab a campervan, motorhome or car from.

More about Christchurch
Christchurch's most defining urban feature is its colonial architecture. The centerpiece of this is the late 18th-century Christchurch Cathedral, positioned in Cathedral Square. The Square branches out into malls, pedestrian areas, and high-rise offices and is where most of the city's activity takes place.
Christchurch's Cultural Precinct incorporates The Square and a few of its surrounding blocks. The Center of Contemporary Art, Canterbury Museum, and the Arts Center are all within walking distance of one another.
Nightlife in Christchurch happens mainly around Oxford Terrace. Bars and cafés account for most of the action while nightclubs open later in the evenings. Christchurch Casino differs from most in the Asia Pacific for its boutique European flavor, while the cinemas around Cathedral Square cater to everyone in the family.
A hub for travel on the South Island and a launch point for any Antarctic endeavors, Christchurch is served by Christchurch International Airport, 12 kilometers from the city center.
