Laluna Hotel and Resort
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"This hotel has been one of the highlights of my travels around Asia. Set on a quiet road about 15 minutes walk from the centre of Chiang Rai, the fairly ordinary entrance road does not prepare you for what waits at reception and beyond. Once checked in the friendly staff guide you through a tropical paradise of plants and trees to one of the spacious and well equipped bungalows. Make sure to bring mosquito repellent as this is one of the prices you pay for staying in the centre of so much greenery. Reception staff are friendly and helpful although two of my few criticisms of the resort are that a) Their airport transfer is overpriced by about 200 baht (I booked through the tour place across road) and b) some of their tours are also more expensive than walking across road - plus there do not seem a lot of options for the solo traveller. But these are both small, easily remedied criticisms. The attached restaurant bar provides breakfast in the morning and drinks and meals at night; remember to get your daily 10% discount coupon and remember the 3 for 2 happy hours too. The restaurant have both friendly staff and some amazing food. Try the Kao Soi Gai - a new dish for me and now one of my all time Thai favourites! The breakfast buffet was perhaps the best I have experienced with a wide range of Thai and Western choices. Also easy to get a tuk tuk up to the night market (should be about 50 baht each way) All in all, the LaLuna is a gem in Chiang Rai and is most definitely on the 'must return' list!"

Pimanninn
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"Stayed at Pimanninn for first time, and was more than satisfied w/ quality of room, especially for having been booked at such budget price. Location is not the best in Chiang Rai, but one may walk to several areas of interest w/in 20 minutes. Staff is very friendly, although severely lacking in English communication skills. Swimming pool is rather large, and Fitness Center is replete w/ high-qualify fitness equipment. If visiting Chiang Rai in future, will definitely consider booking at Pimanninn again."

Wangcome Hotel
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"Wangcome is a pleasant clean hotel right in centre of Chiang Rai, all the facilities which a tourist may require are readily to hand. It's a little dated but clean and comfortable. The breakfast menu could do with a little more imagination, however, there is more than enough choice to see you through to a late lunch "

Blue Lagoon Hotel BY diamond (SHA Plus+)
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"Greatest thing was Suvanna, the manager. She was extremely warm, friendly and helpful. I also really appreciated her English speaking skills. 2nd best was the pool that is long enough for laps. Poolside furniture was not very good. My room was very clean but the cleaner they use is toxic. I only let them clean my room once because the smell lingered for days. Breakfast buffet same everyday, mostly asia. Pancakes, French toast, peanut butter occasionally would have been nice. All in all, little pricey but nice place to stay."

Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort SHA Plus +
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"It is Le Meridien, so of course I am picky. First of all it is quite surprising to find such a huge mega resort in a place like Chiang Rai. First day was extremely quiet, almost no clients in the hotel, it gives the experience an uttermost feeling of luxury. The following day at least 60 Spanish people in coach bus and 30 Chinese people raided the hotel... it was different =_= It is only for people who love this kind of huge luxury building, and already know Le Meridien's style. They made proper efforts to use as mush teak as possible and have the Thai feeling in the architecture. Service is really good, and "Net" was really helpful, thanks to her! If you are in Bangkok, it is only 1:20 flight to chiang rai and then a 10 minutes ride to the hotel, worth it to go away from the craziness and pollution of the capital. +++ Positive +++ + Amazing setting, the view on the river or the massive trees lighten with lanterns in between the buildings... the camp fire in the evening... we even saw a meteorite crashing few kilometers from us, it is hard to top that. + Spacious and clean rooms + Super comfy beds (zzzZZZ) + Big balcony + Excellent service (special mention to the woman called "Net" at the front desk!) + Food in general in the three restaurants is really good + For 400THB the breakfast buffet is good, but I would say 300THB would be a fairer price + 24/7 gym + Great WiFi + Hotel shuttle to airport (200THB) - the guy is from Fast & Furious though + Almost everyone in the team speaks a really correct to excellent English --- Negative --- - For this price and expectations, rooms should have a double door sas system. We really hear too much the people walking by or the room service ringing and talking to the guests next to us. So long privacy... - Shower is good, and water temperature is stable but having a plastic bathtub in this kind of hotel makes everything look super cheap all of a sudden. - TV is way too small, or the room too big I don't know, either way it i"

The Riverie by Katathani (SHA Extra Plus)
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"Family room suite has spacious space, worth the price. A 7-foot King size bed is perfect for family who has to sleep with kids. No floor stepping which would be dangerous for toddlers. Check in/out service is fast. Breakfast is good for everyone. A lot of selections, changing everyday. Gyms is also good but close at 8 pm is too early for nowadays's trend. Kids' club has a big ball house which is heaven for every kids (Small toddlers to the early adolescent!) It's free, though! This hotel is probably the only hotel in Chiang Rai which has a good kids' club with ball house. Anyway, hotel should provide attending staff, at least to control kids'play which always has various age groups at the same time. Another toys are mostly broken. Should be replaced and get maintenance. Swimming pool is also awesome for kids. A pool bar is also available. (It may be even a lot better if there is a curly water slide.) In-room amenity is well equipped."

Wiang Inn Hotel
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"This is my first time at this hotel and it’s the best of the 3 hotels I have stayed in Chiang Rai. The location is very good in the centre of the traditional part of Chiang Rai. There are plenty of Thai and foreign restaurants nearby. The Night Bazaar is only 2 minutes’ walk and these markets are great affordable shopping with cheap eating options. The room was very pleasant and comfortable. The breakfast buffet is great with much variety. The staff are friendly and helpful. The shuttle to the airport is only 100 THB per person. The swimming pool is big and deep however, it is not suitable for non-swimmers and children. Even the shallow end is deeper than a young child. Supervision is essential. The hotel is popular for tour groups which means that the tourism industry sees this as value for money, but also means it can be very busy, especially with booming Chinese tourism. I have nothing to be disappointed about with my stay here."

B2 Night Bazaar Chiang Rai
City Center,Chiang Rai - View on map
"I stayed at this comfortable hotel on my last evening in Thailand, and was incredibly impressed. The rooms are just as comfortable as any midrange hotel in Europe or North America, and at a fraction of the price ($10). The staff were welcoming and friendly, and handed out free candies to guests upon arrival. The hotel is located around a 10-minute walk from the Night Bazaar and the heart of sleepy Chiang Rai. The bedding and rooms were extremely comfortable, and though the bathrooms were spartan and featured those pesky electronic water heaters, they were perfectly acceptable. If you find yourself in Chiang Rai, this is the perfect place to hang your hat - it's almost impossible to not enjoy your stay here."

More about Chiang Rai

As a regional capital, Chiang Rai gives its name to the entire province, and travelers come here for rustic getaways, jungle trekking, and a chance to engage the dozen hill-tribe cultures that have settled here. Legend states that Thailand's famous Emerald Buddha was discovered here, and while its temple remains, the prized artifact has been moved to Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew.

Visitors typically spend a night or two in the city center, or Amphoe Muang Chiang Rai, before heading out into the backcountry. With the borders of Myanmar and Laos just over the horizon, there is plenty of culture to explore. The three countries meet at the Golden Triangle, a once lawless land that has replaced opium cultivation with the safer and more reliable tourist trade. Attractions here include the Hall of Opium, Burmese-styled temples, and excellent hill-tribe trekking opportunities.

Chiang Rai’s peak season is in December and January, a time that attracts many domestic travelers to enjoy the cooler temperatures the region offers. The city’s best hotels are located along the Kok River or near the centrally located night bazaar, and they provide excellent assistance in arranging the activities you would like to partake in.

Be sure to check out the interactive map of Chiang Rai for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
