A hotel with great gems ”

I chose Chulia Mansions (CM) after reading the great reviews from agoda. After checked in , realized that the reviews were pretty accurate. I went with my sister to penang to celebrate her birthday. First time to penang and the great experience stay in CM did make penang a nicer place to visit. We will come back to penang because of CM. Location : We took bus 401 from airport to Georgetown. Cost 2.70 ringgit, 45 mins. On our way back, we took 401e from the komtar bus terminal, 35 mins. Cab around 60-80 ringgit. We told bus driver to alight us sat Georgetown.First time, we walked 25 mins then located CM. Subsequently, once u familiar with the route, around 10 mins from CM to shopping malls n komtar . Most of the days, we walked to most of the places we interested. U can also take free bus (CAT). Get the map from airport. V useful n pretty easy n accurate. Room : we stayed at room 207. New, spacious, and clean. Complimentary 2 bottled water each day, toothbrush, toothpaste,shampoo,shower wash n handwash. However, no slippers. Breakfast : really impressive given it is a 3 star hotel. Coffee machine, tea, different type of bread n spread. Fruits n many choices of eggs n other dishes. They even have one vegetarian main.my sis I were delighted as we are vegetarians. Love their : free afternoon tea, free evening drink, free daily 1 kg laundry, lemongrass fragrance throughout the hotel, water dispenser for cold, hot n room temp water at each level. Saved a lot of money on water. Great thanks to the staff,who helped to decorate the room for my sis bday. Complimentary piece of cake from bread history. We were touched with their sincerity , creativity and excellent service. The lobby also beautifully decorated with Halloween theme. V creative. All the staff I encountered were friendly, helpful, speak good English and made us feel v welcome.

Excellent and great value for money ”

Stayed as a little treat after a week working in KL . Chulia Mansion is in a great location which made getting out and about easy. Chulia Street is a fairly busy road and bus route but I didn't find it overly noisy (stay was in April, the previous week was school holidays so may have been busier). Great staff, courteous and helpful; my only problem (fridge) was sorted same morning. Place is spotless, seems to have a 24/7 cleaning roster. Easy to get on nodding terms with staff, I even got a slice of cake for one young lady's birthday. Room was clean and comfortable. Only complaint is that it could have done with more storage (one of those plastic sets of drawers on castors would suffice) . The rooftop bar offers good views (alas no seaview) and the two free drinks each evening was a bonus (as were the allday café and free icecream). Good buffet breakfast, western food is limited but fine if you eat local style (noodles and curry for breakfast...yum yum). Free 1kg/day laundry also useful as if it's as hot and humid as on my visit, you'll shower and change clothes twice a day. Good choice of local restorans, hawker stalls, café/bars and a couple of western style places (best, and cheapest to eat local ; I'd recommend the big Indian place, a 5mins walk to the right on the corner alongside the green and white mosque and the cafe opposite the Betel Leaf bar). The latter was also my favourite bar... cheap (RM15/17 for a 500ml beer) and wonderfully grotty but friendly. I mainly visited Penang for old Georgetown, for which CM is well located for both walking and local buses (a short walk to both the free city centre and RM45/24hr hop on/off buses). Not ideal for the beach, though you can easily reach some via bus or taxi. All in all, CM is a great mid price stay, good location for old Georgetown, clean, good basic facilities, great staff plus some welcome extras and good value for money. Would (and have already) heartily recommend.

Will stay here again”

Chulia Mansion exceeded my expectations.It's nicely located in Lebuh Chulia, near to many eateries and good food, and a short walk away from attractions such as the Paintings St, the museums, Komtar / Prangin Mall. Many buses pass by this area and it's easy to just hop on one to places like Penang Hill or Ayer Itam Kek Lok Si. The Penang CAT (Free shuttles within the city) is also available nearby. Too bad the free laundry service (we read from other travelers comments that free laundry was provided not too long ago) is no longer available :P The spread of breakfast is really good, with many choices to start with, local desserts (Kueh), salads, cereals and a feast of local food. We stayed here for 4n and each day they changed the local food selections. And these are yummy! Oh not to forget, there's a free drink for each guest each day at the rooftop bar (wines included :) ) and free flow of coffee tea water and ice cream at the cafeteria too... What more to ask for? :D everything is perfect except for two things. 1. Im 1.7m tall, and the comforter is a little short for me.... 2. Our room is just outside the cafeteria and lift. Below the room door is a gap and because of that gap, we could hear the slightest sounds when ppl walk past. Some guests were having a good time and still laughing loudly althought it was 2am. If not for these two concerns, I'd think Chulia Mansion is perfect :)

A lovely and comfortable budget stay in the heart of Penang”

We have throughly enjoyed our stay in Georgetown. Chulia Mansion is on a street that turns into a party at night yet somehow stays pretty chill, where you can still feel set back safely from the action. We enjoyed the comfy king size bed, the views from the roof, the mini fridge, the smiles, the helpfulness of the staff and the perfect location for walking. On the down side, someone had been smoking in the room before we got there, the pillows are too thick and lumpy (great for lounging but less so for sleeping) and the aircon is hard on the sinuses. We loved the fresh fruit at breakfast, the decent coffee and the water cooler in the hall. Overall, this is an excellent hotel for the price and I would definitely stay again. Upon becoming accustomed to Penang, this hotel is lovelier every time you enter. Thank you so much to the wonderful staff who make the heart of this place, it makes all the difference!

One of the best 3 star hotel stays I've ever had”

Chulia Mansion staff are excellent, from the top to the bottom, at all job levels. They're proactive, exceed customer expectations and always make you feel valued as a guest. The quality and care they provide in the buffet, ice cream bar and rooftop cocktails is of an international standard. There's a jacuzzi on the roof where you can cool off after a hot day. The WIFI is fast except for peak night time hours when all the guests are online. The call to prayer at the mosque next door is not bothersome, at least to my ears. The rooms are well designed and efficiently laid out without wasted space. Location is right on Chulia Rd near Penang Rd so you can get to most every place in Georgetown either by walking or the bus.

weekend in Old Georgetown, Penang”

My wife and I spent two nights in Chulia Mansion in June this year. The staff was very friendly and attentive, particularly the gentlemen on the rooftop patio area. The open flow happy hour was fantastic. Our room was very clean and comfortable, including an ample shower and bathroom. The location was within a short walk of all the interesting sites in Old Georgetown. Next time that we are in Penang, we will return to Chulia Mansion.

Getaway at Penang”

2nd time going to Penang but 1st time staying at Chulia Mansion. The location was excellent - turn left from hotel - shopping malls and right side of hotel - roadside stalls. Very convenient to get around. About 10 minutes walk to the Art Street, Upside Down Museum, etc. Book a car which cost RM30 per hour and the service was excellent. The driver brought us to most of the places of interest in Georgetown. Also went to Kek Lok Si Temple and had durians which were cheap and nice. We also tried the famous Ah Ma char koey teow - RM12 for the biggest plate with about 5 big prawns. Overall stay is good and will come back again

Great value for money -- and friendly too!”

We enjoyed many features of Chulia Mansion: its low price, of course, but also the friendliness of all the staff, the rooftop lounge (we got great panoramic shots of Georgetown at sunset), the special free tour, the proximity to many things worth seeing and the accessibility to public transport to get around the island without breaking the bank on taxis. One outstanding feature of the Chulia Mansion was how suitable it was for all its guests, old and young and in between. There was a lovely mix of guests. We recommend it to our friends and family -- and we certainly intend to go back!

Lovely hotel with even lovelier staff”

Our stay at Chulia Mansion was the best we had out of any of the hotels we stayed at over a two week holiday in Malaysia. The hotel itself was very new and clean with excellent amenities. The room was a great size with a big bathroom and a nice tv with working satellite tv channels. The staff were particularly lovely. When we arrived I asked where I could find a local dessert and the receptionist said she would research where while we went out for lunch. When we arrived back at the hotel, she had not only found where the dessert was but had it delivered to the hotel for us and didn't charge us for it, going above and beyond our expectations. Highly recommend Chulia Mansion, best experience I have had at a hotel and still a very reasonable price.

We would stay here again. In fact, we extended our stay not only becaus we love Georgetown but Chulia Mansion Hotel was extremely comfortable. The breakfast is delicious and changes daily. The roof top happy hour is a really lovely bonus plus watching thunderstorms from there is amazing. The bed was big and comfortable. The staff are very nice. The location was perfect! It’s aboit a block from the delicious Chulia street night market. The bus stop is near buy. There are many different restaurants and shops in the area. Plus, there is some of the iconic street art that Georgetown is famous for. I highly recommend staying here.

Solid Value in the Center of Old Georgetown”

Clean, modern and decent sized rooms at a reasonable price. A great value for those looking to checkout the historic district of Georgetown by foot. Skip the mediocre free breakfast (there are some really tasty cafes and brunch spots nearby worth trying - Wheeler's being my favorite). Not many facilities on offer but wasn't expecting much for the price. The location, while central, has one problem. It's located next door to a mosque and the morning call to prayer (around 5am) will certainly wake light sleepers. I brought earplugs and the hotel has double-paned all of their windows but it's still an issue worth considering. Finally, I can't say enough about Phui-mun - one of the evening clerk's at Chulia Mansion. She really helped me out, arranging transportation and giving me great advice for the area. Keep this woman on staff (or given her a promotion!)

Great stay and good location!”

Chulia Mansion has exceeded our expectation. The team has done a very good job on providing a very inviting atmosphere to stay in their hotel. They are friendly and ready to help the guests on any problems encountered. They made good suggestions on the nearby areas for any first timer tourist in Penang. During our stay, they have this mini hawker food fair at the rooftop bar upon Christmas celebration, the food was delicious and superb! We have a chance to taste quite a number of local foods in two nights over the stay. Breakfast was great too with a variety of choices. Overall, the outer building is not reflecting the interior of the hotel and the warmth hospitality provided by the team. Definitely recommended his hotel for anyone who is visiting Penang!

The best hotel to stay in Georgetown.”

We have stayed at Chulia Mansion hotel every time we come to Georgetown. Amazing little hotel situated close to everything. The best part about staying at Chulia is all the extras that are included in the orice. Best breakfast, free icecream, and a complimentary glass of wine in the evening is fantastic. We also want to compliment the staff for addressing any needs that we required during our stay. They responded quickly and always had a big smile. Will always stay at Chulia when we return to Georgetown.

A gem of a place to stay in Penang”

We were surprised to find excellent condition of the room. The bed was very comfortable, AC, TV and wifi were working well. There was a hot and cold water dispenser in every floor . Cofee, tea, ice cream and biscuits were supplied 21 hours a day in the cafe for free. One free drink per person on the roof top bar per day. Outstanding quality of breakfast. A lot of varieties such as muesli, yoghurt, different types of bread, dim sum, rice, noodles, Indian japati, fresh fruits etc. And they had vegemite! The staff were friendly, helpful, proactive, knowledgable with local attractions around the city. We had celebrated the New Year's Eve on the roof top of Chulia Mansion. The hotel provided the guests with light refreshments and life music. We could see fireworks from the roof top. Generally, it's a pleasant stay at Chulia Mansion.

Great location, awesome service”

Very impressed with Chulia Mansion and would definitely recommend it. Staff very welcoming and hospitable. Free laundry, 24-hour coffee/tea and ice cream bar was a pleasant surprise. Hotel also provided free drinks at their rooftop bar each night of our stay. Room was new, clean, and comfortable -- perfect for recuperating after a Penang hawker food eating spree. The breakfast spread is superb for a 3-star hotel and thumbs up for the egg counter. Strategically located along Chulia Street, walking distance to some bars and hawker stalls at night. Thumbs up!

A better choice. ”

We had a wonderful 2 nights and 3 days stay at chulia mansion. Its cozy and have good ambience. Staff there were friendly not to forget we got invited to a bbq party at the rooftop. Food was good. Enviroment was good too. Price were reasonable. Just a little pricy but it was ok due to wrong timing of vacation. It was a public holiday. Hope to stay there again when we go over penang. Thankyou chulia mansion for the wonderful stay:)

3 Star Hotel, 6 Star Location”

The location of Chulia Mansion Hotel is really convenient, walkable distance to most famous attractions such as those street arts. During night, hotel guests can have free 1 glass either alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks at the rooftop. Last but not least, each room has 1KG complimentary laundry service. Whereas, just be mental prepared for the praying radio at around 5:15 - 5:30 am, it wouldn't last for a long time and not too loud. Overall, Chulia Mansion Hotel is recommended to stay if you visit Penang.

The perfect spot in Penang Georgetown at Chulia Street”

This hotel is awesome in terms of quality versus price. The location is top for those who want to stay in Georgetown on Chulia Street very animated street and close to main agents for doing visa. If you go to Penang for doing Thai visa, then you should definitely book this hotel which is 50m from Jim's Place (the best visa agent in town) and 100 meters from many bars for the night. The room has a very nice modern style, very confortable bed, TV and small fridge. They have a rooftop with a bar that serves free wine flow and soft drinks from 5:30 to 7:30 which is a good way to start your evening. I was amazed by the breakfast served there, one of the best I had so far from long time. Huge variety of food, fruits and so on. It's very valuable to get the breakfast included in the price of the room as it really worth it. Breakfast from 7.30 to 10:30am. The staff is lovely and very helpful and was totally surprised to get a tip from me at the end of my stay while checking out. TOP !

A friendly and modern hotel”

We had a fabulous stay at Chulia Mansion. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel was impeccably clean. The rooftop area provided a welcome respite from the noise and bustle of Georgetown (the partial shade on the roof provided a little relief from the sun, but not from the heat and humidity). And the rooftop was a great place to have a drink and to meet others in the hotel after the sun went down. The building next door is a mosque and the loud-speakers were only about 20 metres from our window, however it appeared that these speakers (thankfully) were not being used.

Geat staff, excellent location”

I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel. The staff are very attentive, sensitive to the surrounding and they function like a family where they help to cover each other's job. The staff remembered that no salt to my eggs on subsequent days after I've made my order once. The chef came out to serve when other staff was busy, he even helped to open door for tenants who were done with their brekkies. They pay attention to various small details. Its location is great and highly accessible to many places if you enjoy walking around. I certainly enjoyed my walks and exploration to various streets and lanes. I'd definitely go back to Chulia Mansion Hotel on my next trip to Penang.
