Chateau Tongariro”
My family (husband and teenage daughter) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Chateau Tongariro. We hiked the Tongariro crossing and the hotel's location was great for other hikes as well. The plunge pool and sauna were a soothing place to relax sore muscles after the hike. The roast pork I ate in the dining room was superb and my husband and daughter enjoyed their entrees as well. The coin operated laundry near the pool was convenient and a welcomed surprise in a grand hotel. Be sure to sit and have a drink in the lobby and take in the view.

Historic hotel in winter wonderland”
Bayview Chateau Tongariro is a historic hotel set in an amazing place. The hotel exudes old-world charm, though the facilities may not come across as brand-new. Located halfway up Mt Rurapehu, the hotel provides a great view of the surrounding mountains, which is particularly impressive when snow has fallen. It also allows easy access the Whakapapa ski field, as well as the surrounding treks around Mt Ruapehu. Ridge track was awesome to catch sunset! Concierge was also helpful in giving advice on road conditions. We appreciate that greatly! However........ The food option was some what limited and pricey. We had both dinner and breakfast on the next day at Pihanga Cafe. While we had a good experience and delicious dinner, the breakfast was not value-for-money.

I loved my stay at the Tongariro Chateau. We went there after a tramp through the Tongariro. The hot chocolate was the best I ever had!!

Good location for skiing, nice facility & service”
despite the resemblance of the building to a hospital, the hotel features very classic and well maintained interior design and facility. only 5min away from the tourist information centre and a small convenience store, you can get most of the useful travel information and daily consumption items fairly easily. there are several walking tour paths just nearby for people who enjoy the surrounding scenery. and the hotel itself has several bars/restaurants/taverns that offer a wide range of food selections. the whakapapa skiing resort is only 15min by bus and the tangoriro national park 20min away. for those skiing fans with a generous budget, i highly recommend this hotel, for it's location and great service and facility.

Great old world hotel in the best location”
This was the most expensive hotel of our 30 day holiday. A lovely, Romantic setting with the snow capped mountains as a backdrop. Our room was a little tired and needed carpets replaced, but we would stay there again. I would reccommend a stay at Bayview Chateau Tongariro to every couple.

One word Superb ”
The chateau is one of the few hotels that is left on the world where they write Service with a big S. What about the view from the lounge on the surrounding - spectacular What about the lounge itself with it is real open fire during the evening. And what is the most important part of the whole review - You can get this all for an affordable price.

Very good”
Great location for hikers doing the Tongariro Crossing. Room was clean, but bathroom is very dated and smelled.

Exceptional”
Excellent location , staff, and food. The chateau was far from full yet we had a lovely room that faced another room. There was a view of a room and brick wall not the street or mountains or fields.

Holiday maker”
The meal was the very best Lamb meal I have ever tasted in New Zealand. All the staff smiled, were friendly, helpful and polite. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Oh and our room had a magnificent view of the mountain. Thank you Chateau, we shall return.

Fantastic hotel”
Great hotel, very enjoyable stay, only way they could improve would be to offer valet parking - but the car park is very very close so it doesn't really matter. Can't wait to stay there again got was fantastic

Great Building Poor Customer Servicd”
4 star look, 2 star service. Having made two separate bookings of two "superior rooms", in August for two stays in December I was disappointed by the following; For the first stay the rooms were three floors apart, musty (which can be expected for an old building) and certainly not "superior". No air conditioning which is odd for a 4 star hotel but perhaps part of the "feel of the beautiful old chateau". Upon opening a window the rooms promptly filled with blow flies, apparently fly screens like air conditioning would affect the "feel" of the chateau. For the second stay, early check in was unavailable, however in the six hours between us popping in and the official check in time staff made no effort to prioritise the two rooms preparation. Upon the 3pm check in there was a 40 minute delay for a room. Instead of offering tea/coffee/water/internet during the delay, staff said "only one room is ready please wait there." Both rooms this time contained a blowflies before we opened the windows. Having stayed at numerous other comparable 4/5 star NZ Hotels during my trip to NZ, I was disappointed with the Chateau Tongariro. The Chateau is a beautiful building, however no effort has been made to uphold what I assume was once great customer service and a quality experience.

Weekend at the Chateau ”
We spent the weekend at the Chateau to celebrate my partners birthday. The staff were excellent and the facilities were great with the old world charm that we expected. The only disappointment of the weekend was the meal at the near by Tussock Bar on the Friday night.

Majestic location, stately hotel”
The hotel maintains its air of majesty and splendour despite its age. The lovely old-style lounge area with huge windows and mountain views is perfect for an afternoon rest and coffee, or to sit back and enjoy the piano being played in the evening. We found our room to be a little jaded in appearance, but perfectly functional in all respects. We had our evening meal in the Pihanga Cafe and breakfast in the Ruapehu Restaurant. We thought both were good value for money with a good range of food offered. (This was just as well as the options along the road did not look so appealing.) Staff in both food outlets were were friendly as indeed they were throughout the hotel. The location is quite spectacular, and although we arrived in afternoon rain, once it had cleared the views were stunning.

Just amazing!”
Hubby and I stayed here for 2 nights on our self-drive contiki tour of NZ. Wow. This hotel is amazing. It rained on the first day so we took advantage of the hotels own cinema. The next day we headed up to the ski field to mess around in the snow. The breakfast was awesome! Never seen so much variety in my life - they even had a veg and fruit juicer, and nutella!!! My room was newly refurbished - only complaint is the radiator regulator/ nozzle was on backwards. So when we put it on 0 it was very hot, and 5 was off.

John&Anne”
We were happy with our room, clean and everything we required. Most enjoyable dinner in the Ruapehu Room and happy with the price. Breakfast was a disappointment, we wanted a light breakfast but could not get breakfast for under $29 odd each. That was a rip off and placed a blot on our stay.

It was a nice stay”
We had a nice stay at the Chateau. Location was great. The breakfast buffet is worth the money, lots of decent breakfast foods and kids eat free too.
